I'm ready to install my vent windows on my 53, and I opened the roll of Dennis Carpenter tape from my anti-rattle kit. I cut it in half to do both windows. I know to double it over and it fits between the glass and frame. The parts I don't know are: the tape has a cloth backing that's nearly impossible to separate from the rubber and when I do the rubber is not sticky. So, does the cloth backing stay on? If so, does it go next to the glass or frame? I also assume that no adhesive is needed? Is that correct? Thanks for any help!
Well, I searched through all the previous threads about the tape and no answer. At least I can bump this back up for you.
If you don't get an answer, you might try calling Carpenter and asking them how to do it (actually I'd call C&G [760] 740-2400 - talk to Kyle. Everytime I call Carpenter it's like they are all smokin dope or something back there), or take your stuff up to the local glass shop and either ask them how or have them install it - shouldn't be more than about $25!
My guess is the cloth backing stays on and it goes next to the glass - but just a guess from seeing some way back in my mind!

Kevin, I'm just hoping to get them back together in some sort of workable fashion. To say all of the rubber and felts needed to be replaced is an understatement! I'm heading for Iowa next month, so if Spfld is on the way, I'll be making a quick detour to 6th and N. Grand! I hope you got there before noon; in the old days they'd sell out by noon on Sundays and then close up shop. Chocolate Honeymooners rock!
If you can spare a vote next month, one of my best buddies(and fellow Lanphier alumni) for the past 46+ years is running for Sheriff (Jeff Regan).
The vent glass is installed in the vent frame with "glass tape" which is available from any autoglass shop.
I may have to do that. But, this stuff is paid for and I'm trying to figure it out. Maybe you use clear silicone sealer on the cloth site and slide the glass into the silicone/cloth, then the rubber side goes into the metal channel(shrug)?
I checked with the guys at C&G today and their tape is smooth on both sides. But I also talked to the guys in the glass shop next door and they said on tape like yours, the smooth side goes on the glass and the textured side goes into the frame.
Julie, thanks for checking! I bailed out last night and for $5.00 I included new "tape" in with my Mid-Fifty order. We'll see what they send me. If it's the same stuff, I'll try to follow your advice.
When i got my tape from mid fiftys it was to thick.I couldn't get the glass in. So i got some black gasket maker called mega black. It worked great. But let it dry good then trim it back.
I used the window tape from Sac Vintage Ford. It is smooth on both sides and the fit of the glass was snug. My mechanic buddy had me put a little black silicon sealer in the channel before a sqeezed in the tape-coversed glass. After it was in, I trimmed the tape to make it flush with the edge of the frame. Good luck, Jag
