Help me locatemy oil leak (still leaking from somewhere!)

My truck has had a steady drip of oil coming off the oil filter since i bought the truck a few weeks ago, and the PO said it was from the CCV being vented into the engine bay. I thought that sounded odd but I haven't had time to look at it until yesterday. I was installing my new 6637 and noticed the back of the drivers side valve cover is wet with oil.

as you can see it looks like its based around the CCV doghouse, but I didn't see any oil actually leaking while the truck was running (I put the filter back on first) so I'm not sure what the deal is.

Any help tracking this leak down is greatly appreciated!

on a side note, I get a decent amount of smoke from the CCV, and when I did the oil cap test I was getting the same smoke from there though it didn't blow the cap off, should I be worried?

Thanks for helping a

From what I can see on the photo, I would say that your CCV o-rings are shot. The factory o-rings will turn into Gummy Worms .... LOL

also, i'd get atleast 8ft of 3/4in heater hose, along with a 3/4in barb fitting and route the exposed hose from the ccv, to the bottom of the truck.

The ccv is going to put out oil vapors. Looks like the firewall has a little coating as well. Look into the ccv mod or return to the stock setup. Running it like that you can get dirt in the ccv and may get clogged up which can cause bigger problems. I would take it off and clean it and replace the o rings like Bob suggested.

So that link is for all the o-rings I need to do the CCV? I'll order them tonight if thats all I need. I'll pick up the heater hosing tomorrow to finish the CCV mod the PO started.

The o-rings might help, but you really need to address venting the gas to a more appropriate location. You will get a slight condensation of vapor fumes from the way yours sits now. Most hook a rubber heater hose on there like mentioned above.

Just make sure to keep the hose pointed down hill to keep any low spots from freezing with condensation or filling with oil. The way it's typically done is like this. Welcome to guzzle's CCV mod web page, or you can buy one of the kits to do this from a sponsor.

I plan on routing the CCV to the rear of the truck, I've read the mod writeup on it already. Would I get a steady drip from just the vapors condensing, because when the truck is running it drips steadily. I'm ordering the O-ring kit tonight so next weekend I'll install them and the vent line for the CCV and see if that fixes the leak.

This is the o-ring that goes bad. I had the same leak until I did my CCV mod and replaced the o-rings. Click on the pic to enlarge.

so I found some time to dig into the oil leak now that my o-ring kit arrived, and I think it turned out great.

it's easy to see why it was leaking, Ponyboychris was right on the money.

new o-rings, yay!

new o-rings installed.

before

after

CCV vent line installed. I ran it over the master and along the inner frame rail, and ended it at the back of the fuel tank skid plate.

Nice job. Glad you found your leak. I went ahead and painted my V/C a little different color.

love the blue! I didn't need to pull my covers so I stuck with black. I'm just relieved I don't have to park in the street at customer houses anymore.

well, even though my CCV o-rings did need replacing that was not the source of my major oil leak...I left a job today and saw the tell tail drips on the pavement under the oil filter. I climbed under the hood and looked in the valley after a hour long drive and there is no standing oil anywhere I can see, and the base of the turbo looks the same as it always does with a little old crudded up oil around it but nothing fresh leaking from it.

I looked under the truck and took a few pics of the area wet with fresh oil, which seems to be the entire drivers side of the block.

not the best pictures, but you can see where the oil is running down the side of the block and dripping off the oil filter, and a little off the crossmember, and a couple other places. I can not for the life of me figure out where it could be coming from.

If it is running down from the upper end of the engine, I would speculate that the oil rail plug on the end of the cylinder head is leaking. It is not a common place to leak but is known to happen.

You really need to get it all cleaned up with de-greaser and then watch where fresh oil appears. It is possible that the rear gasket on the oil cooler is leaking and air currents while driving could move it up the engine.

I'll clean it up tomorrow and see if I can narrow down where it's coming from.
