yes the intake wasn't actually removed from the engine (didn't specify that part) but with all bolts out and holding it up I was able to manage to get the EGR cooler beneath and aligned up right. As for the oil cooler it came out easy with a swivel neck, long extension and torx socket.
Yes the truck is cranking normal when hot so if thats the case STC may not be the culprit. I watched the oil gauge in the mornings when the truck does fire it takes a couple of seconds before the gauge moves.
Yeah the hose with the black box has excessive oil build up! looks like a leak but i haven't torn into it yet. It has the whole valve cover wet with oil. I assume its leaking slowly. It is cranking fine after you drive it, you can shut it off for 2-3 hrs and it will fire right. Only after it sits over night it turns over and over then fires. I will check the hose and box to see what all I can find wrong with it. You may be on to something here because the truck was cranking fine before the synthetic oil change now I notice more oil coming from that box. The oil is now thinner so maybe seeping out causing low oil pressure on start up.
My FICM I replaced 3 months or so ago and sent it to SWAMPS to have them test it, it came back fine. Its a 58v hot flash I bought from them.
Not saying the pcv is the problem on the hard start, only suggesting to replace the orings to prevent it further leaking oil all over the place. The hard start will be something else. Common causes are the ficm and stc fitting. I updated my dummy rail plugs to the latest part number as well. From what I understand they can cause this too. I myself had a problem with a stuck valve in the oil filter housing which would allow the oil to seep back down into the pan. I would have to crank for a little while to build the pressure back up before it would start. Once I got that fixed mine would fire pretty quickly. These engines won't fire without proper oil pressure. I would follow cheesit's suggestion, he is well known on the forum and has provided life saving support to many of us....myself included.
yes i think the simpler things to try first is on my list. I will try the valve in the oil filter housing. Mine does seem like the oil is draining down sitting overnight and during the day when I crank it every 3 hrs or so its firing like it should.
Yes also thanks to the both of you and everyone else on these forums, you guys have gave me insight and much help before I became a member. I would look through the forums to find info and several times got good info and "the right" info. Again thanks to all!
I will give it a shot of DIY and see what I turn up....I'll keep you guys informed.
I may be totally off base.. But I have noticed that when I buy Diesel fuel from the local station down the street.. My crank time goes up considerably and have to almost double the diesel kleen in order to get it to start up in 1-2 seconds... But when I take a ride and grab my fuel from the truck stop.. It fires up nice and quick even without the Diesel Kleen... Funny.. I hardly ever get a tank of bad gas....
I may try some Diesel Kleen to see if it helps mine. I went out this morning and it was 50 degrees and the truck fired right up first spin. Seems like something minor causing my issues? Yesterday morning it spun about 4 seconds before firing.....WEIRD!
Yeah I posted on the same subject about 3 weeks ago.. So now I just throw half a bottle in of diesel Kleen every fill up and it fires up in 1-2 seconds.. Friday night it got down to 27* and it fired right up...
Yeah when I changed oil I tried to use the "motorcraft" brand filter this time and did the synthetic oil change to T6 man what a difference on firing. Now though some mornings it fires up within a second and then some mornings spins for 4-6 seconds. I haven't run any Diesel Kleen through mine in a while so I will try that.
We are just getting into the 50's in LA (lower Alabama) its getting nice finally. Taking a trip to Pigeon Forge, TN 12th of November so trying to get old Betsy running right. 500 mile trip so that should clean her out on that run.
I don't use the diesel kleen to clean the injectors as much as I use it to boost the ceatane (do?) level, lube the injectors and to disperse the water...
I ran at lunch and grabbed some to see if it helps out. Really won't know until tomorrow morning after it sits all night. Thanks to all for tips to try.
STC fitting is on 05,6,7 trucks and connects the high pressure oil pump to the engine. It's under the turbo under a cover in the valley of the back of the engine.
