If you are rebuilding the engine than yes replace all bearings. The cam is prolly fine. The bearings is part of what builds oil pressure and if they are worn at all it can lower the pressure.
well then was the thread really needed? I mean, isn't the first rule of engine rebuilding is replacing all the gaskets AND BEARINGS????
It was probably not needed, but 99% of the posts here qualify for that category, but I am glad to see you used it to boost your post count!!!! Way to go!!!
OK no where did I say I was rebuilding, BUT I guess in a way I am... SO here is all the info...Bought the truck guy SWEARS there is nothing wrong with it, it runs fine, within 48 hours we are rebuilding the carb, so it then runs, great, fine. Two weeks later it is acting funny, I pull it over into a parking lot and it just so happens my Dad is there (TTL!) he drives it back to his place on the way and it back fires like no bodies business, crazy, like a bomb going off, then it dies. Dad gets it going on a prayer and he tells me he knows what it is...The timing chain. SO, he gets a new chain and puts it in, and it drives for about a block and dies once again. He has this really nice guy help him (one of his neighbors) and he says he thinks it the cam, so the next day Dad takes a look and sure enough he is getting no pressure on the first valve (and only the first valve) and says ok we need a new cam, that brings us to today. So today he puts the cam, and that is putting it nicely because this old girl DOES NOT want to come out. He is twisting and turning and generally having a hard time, that is when he notices the barring and the original problem I posted.
Honestly we are really upset, we just needed a truck to get us from point A to point B NOT a project, and here we are 5 months later and we have only driven this thing for about 2 weeks total and we are knee deep into a project we have NO money for.
SO what Dad just asked me was, he ordered a new cam (the old one was almost flat on one side) would it mess up the new cam to put it on the old barrings??
ps the back fire I spoke of earlier, blow a hole in the muffler so big you can put your head into it
the cam is shot! totally worn down that is what started us down this road
I see what yer saying girl. I have replaced a cam and not the bearings and got away with it. But it is like taking a shower and putting yer dirty panties back on. Not that I wear panties. Much

If I wasn't sure of the past of the engine and I had just pulled the cam out to check it for wear even if it checked out I would probably go ahead and get a new cam/lifters and replace cam bearings. That way you can rule out all those things.
Don't forget to break it in correctly or the new one will look like the one you just took out in a short amount of time.
I wonder if this is a cam worn out because of the lack of zink in the oil? How could ya know. Contaminated oil could do the same. I make sure my flat tappets have zink just because it is safe insurance. I would put a cam in truckgirl if ya don,t have access to a cam bearing tool. But pull the pan and see what is in it. Than clean it and the oil pump pickup screen real good. Ya can prolly get many more miles out of it for what you are doing with it. Than look for another engine to overhaul for it to put in next summer and then ya will have the security of knowing what ya got for next winter. And many years after. Let us know how much sludge and metal is in the pan as this may tell us how bad the engine is. And if there is a lot of sludge than I would think it has never been touched.
very front cam barring had a chip and a very small gouge (on the very edge)
would you replace the cam barrings ???
damage is very small but there on very bottom near oil hole
You didn't mention if the engine is still in the truck? Did you dad just puul the cam with it still in?
If it is still in the truck would using a cam bearing tool work in the space allowed? I've only replaced bearing when I've had the motor out of the truck/car....
