It's all looks. I saw a 7 or 8" tip at a rally a couple weeks ago. Looked kind of silly, really. The 5" system sounds a little different than the 4" system, the tip really won't make much of a difference.

Yeah, they are just for looks as Joe said.

My neighbor has a 5 1/2" tip on his Dodge and he has to take it off to go through emissions, so I've heard it both ways. To me it sounds quite different with it on, almost like a trumpet sound. I (as well as the rest of the neighborhood) like how his truck sounds without the tip much better than with it. I rode with him on the highway a while back and the sound was very annoying.

I think he likes how it sounds because it makes it hard to hear his wife talk while they are driving.

I dunno

I'm thinking about getting a 7" tip (18" length). I have 4" turbo back exhaust. Some say they dont like the look but I have a 5" tip and would like to have it a little bigger. Not to mention I would think that with an 18" long 7" tip, it would sound more throaty.

What do you guys think?

I'd be willing to bet a tip that big would have a megaphone effect.

Bryce, I would go no bigger than a 6" tip IMHO. Anything over 6" just looks ridiculous to me... 5" to me is perfect for a regular exhaust. For stacks I like 6".

There was a guy with a dodge at Fort Hood, TX, when I was there prior to coming to the sandbox that had a tip that must've been 10". It was just the tip and the rest of the exhaust was no bigger than 4", it looked ridiculous. I do think it had a megaphone affect, because the truck was loud. But man, that tip looked stupid.

Haha. coffee can is to big. I havent seen a 7" in person and after thinkin about it and getting input, I bet it would look too big. Im thinking of going 6". A lot of the time the tips are too short in length to even have room to resinate or change sound at all, but I bet going from 5" diameter tip @ 10-11" long to a 6" diameter @ 18" long would make a change. I like the way it sounds now, I just would like it to be a little throatier and the extra inch will look good.

The local muffler shop wanted around 150 for a tip + welding. Im thinkin I'll just order one and have them or somebody nearby weld it up.

Check these out. I'm thinking about going black:
Amazon.com: Pypes 4" In 6" Out X 18" Long Diesel Exhaust Angle Tip SS Black: Everything Else

But Bryant had a good Idea with buying the shiny one and doing that black chrome spray on it.... a few coats of clear, a couple coats of the tint stuff, and a couple more coats of clear.
Amazon.com: Pypes 4" In 6" Out X 18" Long Diesel Exhaust Angle Tip Stainless Steel: Everything Else

The only thing I worry about with both the powder coated one and doing the black chrome spray is the stuff chipping off. I am about to put new 35" mudders on and I dont have flaps. Do you think that powder coat will stay lookin good"?

Also, do you guys prefer the clean angle cut or the rolled edge angle cut?

I have the rolled right now and I like it but the straight cut looks a little more raw.

Thanks

That black 18" tip looks pretty good. I asked the supplier not to include the free tip with my 4" exhaust because I don't care for how they look when you can clearly see the connection to the smaller pipe. 18" would work though and would extend the tailpipe out to where I'd like it.
