reinstalling pitman arm

okay, so the new/rebuilt box is in, new lines, everything good to go. Old pitman arm starts on fine. How hard can I tap this thing without damaging the box. I'm still a good 1/4 inch away from it being on all the way. Any input would be appreciated.

Can't you finish pushing it into place when you tighten the nut?

What MID says X2. You should never have to hammer a pitman arm on.
Make sure that you have it on the right splines before you wind it up with the nut.

thanks guys. Right now I've got the drag link disconnected from it so when I put the wrench on the nut I end up turning the shaft, etc. I'll hook up the drag link which should help hold it in place. I've only tapped it on at this point so hopefully I haven't damaged anything internally. Remind me to tell the story about the 1/2 torque wrench that slapped me in the forehead when I tried to tighten the frame to steering box bolts to 150 ft/lbs instead of 55 ft/lbs. Yep, read the wrong torque settings chart. This has certainly been an adventure. Thanks again
