pitman arm installation

I have just finished installing the new power steering box from CPP. Now I am turning my attention to the pitman arm install. I have pitman part number 5356 pat. The problem is that the pitman wont fully go on flush on the splined end. I tried putting on the lock washer and then the nut. The nut wont thread on with the lock washer. I thought the arm goes on the splined shaft really easy. Am I missing something? Almost forgot this is on a 1955 Ford F100.

Thanks
Jerry

The Pitman arm should go on pretty tight, don't want slop there. Try just using the nut to "Press" the Pitman arm on the steering shaft. If it doesn't have a blind spline make sure you have the steering centered.

Great idea using the nut to snug the arm down... Also do you know how to disconnect the old pitman arm from the rest of the suspension?
Thanks
Jerry

Where the Pitman arm attaches to the drag link. Remove the dust cover (metal & rubber cover over the Pitman arm ball). It's usually two screws with a common bit screwhead and a square nut on the back side. There's a large slot on both ends of the draglink (should have a cotter key to prevent it from backing off). Remove the cotter key and unscrew the plug. The slot is larger than a screw driver so you'll need a piece of steel that will fit the slot, a pair of vice grips and a large rod. With the piece of metal in the slot grab it on the other end with the vice grips and use the rod to help turn the plug out. Watch closely for parts coming out and once you insert the new drag link install them correctly. You might want to go to MidFifty under instructions to ensure you're assembling your draglink correctly.
