Hello! I recently purchased my first diesel truck, 2002 F-250. Love it! What an awesome ride! It had 124,000 when I got it, 130,000 now, and the previous owner says he did most service at almost half intervals, oil at 3k, etc. My first question for the board is about oil. I'd like to switch to synthetic since I've always used it before, but I'm wondering if it's ok to switch from dino on an engine over 100k.
Welcome to FTE, Many here including myself use rotella full syn 5W-40 definitely noticeable difference when the weather is cool. And safe to run year round.
I made the switch in my 2002 at 140k, great difference. DO a search and you'll find all kinds of debates about 'types' of oils.
My choice is Royal Purple. I send my oil in for analysis and it always comes back clean. Pushing 20k on a change now. I buy in by the case on eBay, about $100. Use a K&N filter for extra good filtration!! haha
Welcome to FTE. You'll be fine switching to synthetic as long as it has the proper diesel rating. Rotella synthetic went on sale near me for the same price as regular oil back when I had around 300,000 miles on my truck. I switched to synthetic for a couple of oil changes, and when the sale ended, I switched back to dino oil. We've also got several here who switch to synthetic for the winter and regular for the summer, so the only thing the switch will hurt is your pocketbook
I'm reading this and wondering about Rotella... I'd always heard that Rotella wouldn't work on PSD's because it would aerate under pressure and since a PSD relies on pressurized engine oil, the truck wouldn't run well if at all. Has something changed?
