Brake dust?

Ever since I got my front brake pads and rotors replaced by a local mechanic, my front wheels and tires get black sooth really quick. I was it and in no time it is all dirty again. I do not know what brand rotor or pads he used - whatever is probably cheap at O'Rileys. Any recomendation for brake pads to eliminate this issue? Will rotors need to be replaced as well with quality ones?

If you just got your rotors replaced recently you will probably not need new ones. The brake dust is an issue with semi-metallic pads. I recently put new rotors and pads on my truck. I went with the Akebono pads on the reccommendation of many people on this site. I have been pleased with them so far. They still do put off some dust, but way less than the others I had on(they were duralast semi-metallics). And the biggest difference is that what little dust does come off is not black like it was. It is more of a light grey, much less noticable. I got mine on Rockauto.com. My local advance said they could get them, but I got them online, they were a little cheaper.

I use PFC brake pads super long lasting almost zero dust and easy on the rotors they run about 65.00 a set. Not a fan of the ceramic pads just to much pedal fad under extreme use and a little hard on the stock rotors. I get about 45k out of a set of front brake pads and rotors now compared to my under 12k from stock pads.I was changing pads every two oil changes and it was getting insane. All we use at work on the fleet trucks is PFC stuff and decided to give it a try on my own truck and I like it.

Wagner Thermoquiet,is what I put on. They seem to be doing a good job at stopping with no dust.

Never mind ! I saw the earlier post where semi metallic puts out more dust. So guessing it is ceramic. The akebono sounds good as well. maybe I will get a pair of those. Again, guessing ceramic ones.

X's 2

45,000 on my Akebono's still more than half of the pads left. Almost no brake dust, stops just fine. Oh also have original rotors front and back with 75,000 on them, guess those claims going round about ceramics eating rotors is a load of ....

agreed

I love my akebonos so far. I wouldn't hesitate to get ceramics if I was you. I have heard decent reports about the wagner thermoquiets that someone mentioned earlier. I just went with the akebonos cause they were not much more. Like I said got mine on rockauto, really smooth transaction and good purchase.

I think rotors get eaten up by running pads to the nub more than anything else imo.

I would use the ceramic pads! I have them on my truck and do nothing but tow decent sized loads (4500-9000pounds) and have never had a problem with brake fade. I also noticed that I dont have to push on the pedal as hard to get the same amount of braking the factory pads made me. But the best part is the very light amount of dust they give off. The only small thing I have noticed is the very light amount of squeaking after an extended time sitting for the first couple of light stops. I can definitely deal with that over the damn cloud of brake dust the factory pads put out!

I will have to find out what brand the pads were for you guys/gals. I would recommend them to anyone! They were cheap from a local supplier "World Auto Parts"

I will look them up when I get back into town Thursday afternoon and find out for you guys. I am about 4 hours away from home for work, and they are closed for the night.
