On my 2000 standard shift Ranger the shift **** keeps coming off while shifting. After looking at it close, it looks to be in 2 pieces with a previous owner RTV'ing it onto the shift stick. My question is there supposed to be splines inside the ****? Are the splines the only thing holding the **** on the stick? I've learned to live with it, but since our Sable went away, my wife needs to drive the Ranger. She doesn't like the **** coming off. This is the one I'm looking at getting. Thanks,
I've got the same problem on my 2001. The **** has splines only. It's a press fit.
I used silicone adhesive but it might not last for ever. But for 25 kept in my pocket its worth doing a couple of times.
And yeah, it is a pain when it comes off while you're powershifting and now you're stuck in second and can't shift to third because the **** is in your hand and the **** is all icky and rough.
Sell the stick, get an auto for the honey. Nuff Said.
If the shifter shaft has a splined end, then the **** probably should be splined as well. As for attaching it, there's probably an automotive adhesive you can use, but one alternative I'll suggest is motorcycle grip adhesive. The stuff I've seen comes in two sizes - the single-use size ought to do the job (Z1Enterprises.com).
Thanks for the advice. My shift **** is broke in half right under the splined section. Since the splines in the **** are worn smooth, I might just try either the motorcycle grip adhesive or gorilla glue.
