Ford Truck Enthusiasts Members Sound off on Diesel Brothers Scandal

TV show duo get slapped with an $848k fine for violating emissions standards, sparking a fascinating discussion.

Quite a few of us watch Diesel Brothers on Discovery, a show that chronicles the adventures and truck builds from buddies named Heavy D and Diesel Dave. The Utah-based duo have created some pretty wild rides over the years, including the first diesel-powered Ford Monster Jam truck, the Bro Dozer. But even though the Diesel Bros run a disclaimer during each episode claiming they don’t modify or condone modifying emissions systems on pickups, that didn’t stop them from getting into some hot water with the EPA recently.

Back in 2016, a group of Utah-based doctors sued the duo, claiming that they were making illegal modifications to their trucks’s emissions systems. And just recently, the court agreed, slapping the Bros with an $848,000 fine for modifying, marketing, and selling diesel trucks with removed emission control systems and for violating emissions standards. As you might imagine, that created quite a stir here in the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forums, as many of our members own and drive modified diesel Ford pickups.

Unsurprisingly, many members feel like the Diesel Brothers brought this upon themselves, however.

“The issue was that they had a national TV show that makes bro dozers,” said Motohead911. “Is it really surprising that they got fined, given the current environment?”

Some, like Smack Daddy, don’t understand the modern world of diesels, anyway. Ford or otherwise.

“DEF- saving the environment two plastic jugs and boxes at a time! The best day of my life was ditching my 6.7 and getting a 6.2 gas Ford F-250. I despised the DEF.”

Many, many others point out that there are far worse heath hazards out there than a couple of deleted trucks. But surprisingly, a lot of members don’t think that rolling coal is a good idea, regardless of its environmental impact. And TooManyToys does a nice job explaining his position on the topic.

“Agreed that what they did was not that significant. Nor is it what we as enthusiasts have done with our EGR modifications in the soup of the world. I’m not sure low hanging is exactly the term I’d use. I’d put it more like blatant disregard from a position, using a new term, of a social influencer. If you make money disregarding laws, I would also expect a knock on the door. There are always going to be people who desire to be blatant and give society the middle finger.”

So perhaps the Diesel Brothers brought this problem on themselves. Or is the EPA just going a little too far? Whichever side you’re on, we want to hear what you think. So head over here and join this fascinating discussion in the forums!
