By announcing the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV Ford put out an A.P.B. on their competition in the law enforcement market.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is the latest in a long line of purpose-built police vehicles. More than just a dressed-up Lightning it’s designed to handle specialized departmental needs. These needs primarily include providing support at an accident or crime scene. Or on occasion tow a boat or trailer with its 7,700-pound towing capacity. Power output is rated at 452 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque. And while the Lightning Pro SSV is capable of a sub-four-second 0-60 mph time, it’s doubtful you’ll see one coming up behind you in the review mirror.

Lightning Pro SSV Specs and Features:

In addition to the standard equipment for the Pro line, the F-150 Police Lightning Pro SSV includes the following for police work:

  • Police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters for easier entry and exit
  • Built-in steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks
  • Available red/blue, amber/white roof-mounted LED warning beacons
  • An upfit-friendly reinforced instrument panel with equipment top tray
  • Easy-to-clean vinyl rear seats and vinyl flooring

Other features are similar to the current Ford Lightning including a digital cluster and touchscreen. The “frunk” provides 14.1 cubic feet of storage and offers a 220-amp DC to DC power source. Technology includes Intelligent Range and SYNC 4, allowing Ford Power Up over-the-air updates. Also included is Ford’s Co-Pilot360 with Automatic Emergency Braking, and Blindspot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert.

Pro Power Onboard and E-Telematics

Equipped with Pro Power Onboard the Lightning Pro SSV can serve as a mobile power source for a variety of needs. But the Lightning’s big advantage may be in reducing operating costs. As part of Ford Pro’s vehicle connectivity platform, the Lightning Pro SSV connects to the department’s network of vehicles via fleet management software. This connectivity allows departments to manage when vehicles are charged or serviced, lowering operating costs and increasing uptime. Ford says the electric powertrain has the potential to “reduce costs associated with fuel and scheduled maintenance needs.”

“We’re proud to offer America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use the truck’s game-changing technology to help improve their productivity,” said Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro national government sales manager. “The electric powertrain helps to potentially reduce costs associated with fuel and scheduled maintenance needs… on top of purpose-built police additions our customers have come to expect from the leader in police vehicles.”

Ford E-Telematics provides insights and solutions for fleet management including vehicle health and charging status. It also integrates with Ford’s Telematics commercial fleet management application. Available as a web subscription it provides access to Ford’s Public Pro Charge Management and Cloud-Connected Navigation.

Ford is making a big push to roll out commercial electric fleet vehicles. It’s building its own network of charging stations and has 650 electric vehicle-certified Ford Commercial Vehicle Centers across the U.S. With the Lightning Pro SSV it just got the jump on other manufacturers that serve law enforcement agencies. Stay tuned as the company plans to release more information about the 2023 F-150 Lightning and Lightning Pro SSV in the coming weeks.
