Ford Expedition Timberline Off-Grid Concept is Built for Extreme Adventures
The 2022 Expedition is already the most capable Expedition ever, but this one-off Timberline Off-Grid concept elevates it to the next level.
Ford recently released the details on the new 2022 Expedition which includes the Timberline series. The Timberline is billed as the most capable Expedition ever. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be pushed to handle even more extreme adventures. At the Overland Expo East in Arrington, Virginia Ford unveiled the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept vehicle. This concept vehicle has been upfitted with off-road hardware and off-road accessories that will take adventure seekers anywhere they wish to go. “The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept provides a futuristic view of how family adventurers can potentially get even more out of an Expedition Timberline, including the absolute best mobile basecamp,” said Robert Varto, program manager of the concept.
The regular Expedition Timberline series comes packed with enough off-road gear to satisfy almost anyone. This includes an F-150 Raptor heavy-duty underbody skid plate. In addition, it has a class-leading 10.6 inches of ground clearance. It also has Trail Turn Assist just like the full-size Bronco to help tighten the turning radius. The Timberline also rides on 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires. A two-speed transfer case is also part of the package. The Timberline is powered by Ford’s high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine producing 440 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque. Notice we said that will satisfy ALMOST anyone. The Timberline Off-Grid concept goes a lot further.
Expedition Timberline Off-Grid Concept
The idea here is that this is a vehicle that will take you on multi-day off-road adventures. And it will take you deeper than any other Expedition. This is made possible with the help of custom FOX Performance Elite Series 2.5-inch shocks with Dual Speed Compression adjusters and remote reservoirs front and rear. This setup increases the ground clearance from 10.6 inches to a whopping 12.6. The concept rides on 17-inch Method Race Wheels wrapped with 35-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires.
Exterior Accessories
The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept is a rolling campsite. To make it the most complete campsite possible a slew of accessories are included. Some these include a “Thule Tepui Explorer tent with crossbars that attach to its roof rails, a factory-available transmission shield, Overland Vehicle Systems’ Nomadic 180-degree awning that easily pulls out to help protect adventurers from the elements, and a Wild Land portable privacy room shower.” The adventure doesn’t end when the sun goes down. To illuminate the campsite at night, a 50-inch Rigid light bar is mounted above the windshield. There is an additional Rigid 20-inch light bar below the grille. “D-SS Rigid side shooter cube lights are installed atop the hood. Rigid spotlights mounted within the wheel wells and liftgate further illuminate those areas. The flip of a switch turns the lights red for stargazers.”
Interior Accessories
Even the most intrepid traveler has to rest at some point. Inside the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept is an EZ STAK custom aluminum dual storage drawer unit that sits under a custom Lunocamping mattress with room for two. “To make sleeping in the concept vehicle even more comfortable, Luno also provides a concept-specific Base Extender, window shades and portable USB fan. And to ensure this concept vehicle can handle electric loads needed at off-the-grid campsites, a Clarios AGM battery specifically designed for vehicles supporting the most demanding applications.”
Turtleback Expedition Series Trailer
As loaded as the Expedition itself is, there are some things that simply don’t fit inside or on the vehicle itself. And for those items there is the Turtleback Expedition Series Trailer. “The trailer matches the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept with Method brand wheels and Grabber all-terrain tires. It’s designed to hold additional gear for an extended cross-country trip, including a two-burner propane stove and deep-well sink, a pair of drop-down tables, 42-gallon water tank and six-gallon water heater with external shower hookup, plus pancake propane tank. Additional available options include a refrigerator and a 100-watt solar panel.” This setup will allow you to live off the grid for an extended period of time.
Where Can I See It?
The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept vehicle will be shown this Friday through Sunday at Overland Expo East at Oak Ridge Estates in Arrington, Virginia. After that it will be on display at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nov. 2-5. This may be a one-off concept, but it illustrates just what is possible with the new 2022 Ford Expedition.
