F-150 Battles Fusion Sport in EcoBoost Duel: Truckin’ Fast Wednesday

By -

F-150 turns in an impressive time for a tune-only truck, but it loses to the shockingly quick sedan.

This week’s Truckin’ Fast Wednesday video comes to us from the YouTube channel of Paul Josephson and it features a quarter mile clash between a 2018 Ford F-150 STX and what looks to be a 2017 Ford Fusion Sport at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan. Both vehicles are tuned, both vehicles have an EcoBoost engine and both vehicles send power to all four wheels, making it an oddly-even drag race, but if you expect the truck to cruise to an easy win, you will be disappointed.

The Competitors

In the near lane, we have the 2018 Ford F-150 STX driven by Paul Josephson and in the far lane, the 2017-2018 Ford Fusion Sport driven by Scott White. The brief description for the video states that both vehicles have a tune and exhaust upgrades, but in the comments, there is more information shared.

F-150 Vs Fusion Sport Mid-Track

The F-150 is powered by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, modified with an engine tune from Brew City Boost along and an unnamed aftermarket exhaust system. We don’t know what kind of power this F-Series pickup is making, but in stock form, this engine offers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, so with the tune, the figured are likely in the  400+ horsepower range and the 500+ torque range. This truck also has the new 10-speed automatic transmission, 22-inch wheels wrapped in 305-millimeter tires and a tonneau cover, bringing the curb weight to 5,000 pounds.

The Fusion is powered by the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 which delivers 325 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque in stock form, but this sedan is also tuned with exhaust, so it is making more-than-stock power as well. Owner and driver Scott White points out in the comments that the car was tuned by Unleashed Tuning and at the track, it tipped the scales at 4,100 pounds.

The Battle

The video begins with each of the turbocharged Ford products sitting at the starting line with the staging bulbs lit. When the green lights drop, both vehicles get a good launch, but the lighter sedan takes the starting line advantage. Through the middle of the short race, it appears as though the truck is closing the gap, but as the two cross the line, the Fusion takes the win.

F-150 Versus Fusion Sport Launch

While the Ford truck lost the race, it turned in an impressive time of 12.49 at almost 109 miles per hour while the Fusion Sport ran a stunning 12.39 at 112 miles per hour. For both of these vehicles to lay down times like this with such simple upgrades shows the performance potential of both vehicles, so crank up your speakers and enjoy!

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
