2015 Super Duty Engineers Q&A: Part 4

We’ve been pretty lucky to have Ford’s engineers hanging out in the forums this past few weeks. They’ve covered a lot of information about the new Super Duties, but of course, the questions never stop coming. I’ve compiled their last batch of responses here for easy reading. Hit the link below to get into the forum thread.

Ford Engineers,

From Scott: I’m sitting in a ’15 model year right now looking at the gauges. We currently offer oil temp and trans temp but not coolant or EGT temp – but it is measured. The engine control module measures these via sensors in the exhaust and on the coolant system, measuring them constantly internally. If the temperatures start to go out of range then the calibration goes into a mode where it starts to protect itself, even so far as entering into limp-home mode: as you probably know this allows you to continue driving at a slower rate if it’s safe to do so.

I have owned 3 superdutys and one excursion. I need the cab room of the excursion, but the capabilities of the truck. So my question is, is there a chance of ever getting a bigger cab like, dare I say, the megacab? Even f150’s cab is bigger than the superduty. I’m looking to get my fourth superduty, but the cab size of the megacab is drawing me in. I’ve been trying to hold off, so is it pipe dream of mine, or is one in the works that I can wait for?

Thanks
Clarence.

Ford Engineers,

We really appreciate hearing your comments on the larger cab, Clarence. We don’t have any news to share and can’t comment on future planning today.

“Couple guys on the Army got a hold of the ’15 charger. It isn’t looking too promising. Everything is nearly the same except the compressor wheel. Turbine side is tiny compared to all the hype before they launched them.”

It came out of the “why should I buy a 15” thread from the 6.7 section.

I really hope that is not true.

Ford Engineers,
From Scott: Thanks for noticing. We’ve increased the size of the 2015 turbocharger because it enables several things: improved engine-exhaust braking, and we’re also able to pump in more air with a larger compressor, so we have 440 horsepower and 860 lbs.-ft. of torque.

There is a “ton” of difference in GAWR between an S130 (up to 16K) versus an S111 (up to 14K).

I realize that Ford may further limit the GAWR based on other factors, like the rear leaf springs used on the wide frames, but because of the discrepencies between your statements and the printed Ford resources, and because of the rear axle rating in the F450 pickup being lower than or the same as the F350 pickup, can you guys please clear it up for us?

This question was bypassed in the last Q&A session.

Ford Engineers,

They call it an S111 because it’s a hybrid and is somewhere between an S110 and an S130.

1. Is there a break in mode, like the GT500s. If so how many miles/time does it last.
2. I’ve heard the exhaust brake is weak. How is it meant to be used; tow haul, manual shift, does it hold the mph when braking?
3. Can you elaborate as much as possible what exactly was done to the injectors, injection pump and fuel pump?

Ford Engineers,
From Scott: We recommend a break in period for the rear axle for towing; 1,000 miles. Regarding the improved exhaust brake, it’s the best exhaust brake we’ve had yet for F-SeriesSuper Duty. I think you’ll agree after you drive it. Regarding #3, we’ve added a new high pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors along with all new injector tips. This increases the ability to pump fuel, delivering the higher capability.

Ford Engineers,
Glad to hear you’re happy with your fuel economy, ultraboyus. Keep on truckin’!

On a 6.2 equipped 2015 Super Duty, on the center gauge panel information display (Type 2 – Lariat trim), the only information provided is transmission temperature on one screen, then a compass display (which is also found over on the 8″ touchscreen) and on the third screen nothing.

Has there ever been internal discussions about providing more information on these screens? It seems like it would be relatively simple to pull more relevant information out of the engine computer, there are many variables that could be displayed, and leaving blank screens as it is now conveys an “unfinished” look to a fully loaded Lariat when going through those displays. Is there a secret, or little known combination of buttons I can press (and that steering wheel has plenty of buttons) to get a back-door undocumented screen with more information?

Could a software/firmware update be created to include more information for these screens in the future? Hint: I would be willing to pay for an update that would include more information were it available. The screens could even have an optional “Advanced Mode” similar to the display in my Fusion, so if a customer preferred a blank screen that could be the default.

Thanks,

Joe

Ford Engineers,

Always interested to hear what our customers think about the information screens, Joe. For example, on F-150, EcoBoost customers wanted to see turbo-boost, so we added that gauge for the 2015. There’s also the favorite screen that customers can personalize with their most commonly used information. Keep on giving us these suggestions.
