1977 Ford F-250 SuperCab Gets 4×4 Conversion, Big Powerplant
Formerly a two-wheel-drive pickup, this 1977 Ford F-250 SuperCab got a 4×4 conversion along with a full redo.
It isn’t everyday we see a SuperCab from the 1970s, mostly because, well, Ford didn’t make a ton of them. Back in those days, not a lot of folks needed or wanted anything other than a regular cab pickup, which is quite the opposite today. Regardless, the previous owner of this 1977 Ford F-250 SuperCab – which is currently up for sale at Bring a Trailer – clearly had a very specific truck in mind when they built this one, which has been upgraded in a number of ways.
For starters, this 1977 Ford F-250 SuperCab began life as a two-wheel-drive model, but it has now been converted to a proper four-wheel-drive pickup. At that time, the seller also took advantage of the truck being apart and completely repainted the frame, along with the body, which is finished in a bright shade of red. The F-250 actually looks pretty original on the outside, save for a set of widened black steel wheels wrapped with meatier 33-inch Interco VorTrac all-terrain tires.
During its refurbishment, the truck’s suspension bits were were replaced, while disc brakes were added up front. The matching red interior was also treated to new threads, but remains bone stock otherwise and only has an AM radio present to provide tunes. It’s pretty bare bones, but at the same time, was more than enough to win over buyers a few decades ago, and it’s all we really need today, too.
The previous owner didn’t leave the truck’s power source alone, however, and wound up swapping out the original engine with a replacement 460 V8 that was rebuilt prior to being placed in this pickup. The big Blue Oval mill isn’t stock either, and has been treated to a Trick Flow intake and Edelbrock carb, helping it make a dyno-verified 404 horsepower and 514 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the wheels via a rebuilt three-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case.
The end result of all that work is an undeniably cool 1977 F-250 that’s more capable and better looking than ever. And given how hard it is to find nice SuperCabs these days, we aren’t surprised that it’s attracting considerable interest at auction, either.
