Why is the Ford Mustang Selling Like Hot Cakes Across the World?

After decades of existence, the iconic Pony car from the blue oval is finally making its way into garages worldwide, as news report that the Ford Mustang was the top-selling sports coupe worldwide in 2015, according to IHS Automotive registration data.

  • Ford sold around 110,000 Mustang Coupes and around 30,000 Mustang Convertibles in 2015; Mustang was the only sports coupe globally to sell more than 100,000 units last year.
  • Once a North American phenomenon, Mustang is now on sale in 140 markets, including Australia.
  • In its first three months on sale in Australia, Mustang ranks as the best-selling sports coupe. Demand is so strong, the pony car was initially sold out through 2017 until a recent inventory bump was allotted.

So why is the Mustang a sudden global phenomenon? Well, for starters, the Mustang has always been a world phenomenon; not when it comes to sales, but popularity. Stars like Steve McQueen, Carroll Shelby and even Richard Hammond have made the Mustang “cool” to crowds that normally aren’t expose to it.

Second—cheap horsepower. Okay, while the Mustang, and specially the 5.0 GT may not be cheap in other markets where it could cost upwards of $50,000 dollars, the Mustang still offers the most bang for the buck compared to others in the segment, just like say, a Corvette Z06 would.

Third—it’s finally caught up with the times. No more solid rear axles on this pony, instead, capable brakes, independent rear suspension, and modern technology help it outperform the finest from Europe.

Ford has apparently tweaked the tried and true recipe for the muscle car with with cutting edge engineering and technology, and the result is a global sales phenomenon.
