Howling noise

2005 F250 195k miles. The truck has developed a howling noise comeing from what sounds like the driveline. It is most apperant at slow speeds with the windows up. It almost sounds like tire growling on the pavment but I can also hear it driving through the grass.

The last vehichle that i heard this from was my dd and ended up being a pinion bearing.

I put it on jack stands, removed the tires axles and driveshaft, spun the pinion yoke by hand it feels smooth. I also checked the rear hub bearings and they feel fine also. With the axles out and it up on jack stands i ran the truck and could still hear the noise. It almost sounds like it is comeing out of the T case output. The T case is a NP 271(manual shift).

Any ideas??

Thanks guys.

When I hear the word HOWLING, the only thing I think of is the rear end! Check the fluid level in there. Got 4W drive? MAYBE front differential.

Thanks Bud that's exactly what it sounds like a howling rear.

The fluid level is good and it spins real free, no binding feeling in the bearings.

The mystery continues.

i had this very sound myself, people kept telling me it was the tires. Well low and behold i got the front end jacked up and spun the front passenger wheel and there it was. Truck has 117k miles on it.

what i noticed was it would kinda stop when i turned left on city streets at low speed. if i turned right it would come back slightly. for your sake i hope its not the rear end.

So it was the hub/bearing?? Or the tire??

Oddly thats the only one i didn't check, pass side front.

You got it good and lined up with the shaft? I found that the one that I
had fail was not at 90º to the shaft centerline.

However the hub bearing could be a better place to start.

Think I found it

I took the front pass side wheel off and could not realy feel anything spinning the brake rotor so I put the wheel back on and gave it a good hard spin and there it was. It feels like it is the hub/bearing. Next question is what brand should I go with.

Ford product lasted 195,000 miles +. Any reason to go with anything else?
