crank but not fire
My 16 year old son has been looking at his first truck, he found a clean 94 f150 4x4 w/300 strait six, five speed. 250K but seems sound.
First looked at it three weeks ago, started good and just ran it and listened.
A few days ago we took it for a drive and all seemed good mechanically. Last night went to purchase it and it turned over just fine but no fire at all. could hear the fuel pump spin when we turned the key, opened the schrader valve near the fire wall and when pushed in gas came out a few inches so it appears to have fuel up to EFI?? When we went to get it last night it was just before a storm and misty/rainy humid. When we drove it last week it started raining part way through the few mile drive, it has been parked in the guys yard since then.
I am thinking coil or dist. cap crack but not even sure where to start since my son has a limited budget. Any way to test anything or should I just purchase dist. cap, rotor, wires, coil? or should I also do the dist. pick-up, electronic control module, etc.?
THanks
Craig

I'm gonna say a bad TFI module. But no sense in not troubleshooting anything anyways....make sure you have power to the coil, then power FROM the coil....the TFI can be bench tested at most autoparts stores....I can't remember if yours is mounted at the driverside fender or on the distributor. Yes it does make a difference on what color it is.
Here's an example of one mounted on the distributor...
And one on the fenderwell:

Thanks for the input. A friend at work has a new TFI for that truck he is bringing in. It looks like it was the wet weather that caused the no fire condition. The guy that is selling the truck called last night and said after the rain stopped he sprayed the dist., coil and wires down with a moisture disp. spray and it started right up. So maybe a small crack in the coil or dist. cap.
I am going to work with my son and replace the coil, dist., rotor, wires, plugs, etc before he starts driving it. He has a front right rotor that seems to be hanging up a little that he is fixing in his school shop class.
Thanks again,
Craig

Hello, i have the same problem with a '84 F-150 5.0 4x4 auto, and am curious as to the color difference of the TFI module. i assumed the same thing and popped off the Motorcraft(black) module (189,000 mi), and the one i got from the parts store was grey. what difference does the color make? engine size?...trans type?..etc. did i get the wrong type? thanks for any info...
