C6 Transmission help???

C6 Transmission help???
I have a 1988 F-150 4X4 with 4.9 engine and C6 tranny with borg warner transfer case, and am not able to find reverse gear or sometimes even neutral and park. What I've done so far: inspected the linkage- all seems well
disconnected the modulator vacume hose- no difference
disconnected the neutral safety switch- no response
disconnected the shift linkage and verified each gear position- pushed all the way up, was Park....Next notch down, was drive or any forward gear (should of been reverse).....Next notch down, was forward gear again (sometimes neutral)....Next notch down, forward gear....and so on, with only forward gears. So my question is?
How should the shift linkage work to engage each gear of the tranny? Also, what are all the components involved with the shifting of the tranny? I cant find any diagrams or material on this. I know someone out there has had this or a similar problem before. Please help
