1952 F6 Transmission - Fix or Replace?

Hello All,

She shifts poorly, sometimes she goes into gear, sometimes not. Yes, I do double shift with no help sometimes. The sweet spot to get her in gears moves around... arghhh... Tired of grinding gears... it can't be good...

I have a flat head V8 with synchro 4 speed and dual speed rear axle.
The brakes were just fixed and evidently they get oil from the differential. Darn.
Does that mean I have to replace everything from the engine back to the rear brakes?
I really would love to put an automatic transmission in her.
Does that mean I need to replace the dual speed axle?
And hence new drums and brakes?

So... the question is... can I go automatic tranny? How?

Thanks,
Chris

I know the T98 was optional for the F6, but most usually came behind the 254 I6, not the V8. My F6 w/V8 has the 4 sp. crashbox. But you mentioned double shifting anyway. I would suggest rebuilding the current transmission, especially if it's the T98 synchro trans. You'll be able to keep your parking brake, and nothing else will need replacing. The manual trannies aren't the most difficult to rebuild, especially with Ford Flathead Engines - VanPelt Parts & Service available as a resource. Flathead Parts Drawings-Transmissions The other possibility is your clutch is wearing out, and just isn't allowing you to shift smoothly. It's your truck, but personally, putting in an auto tranny is opening a big can of worms.

the gears in the 48-52 syncros are the same as the 53-55 4 speeds. The cases are way different but the gears are the same.

Welcome to the FTE, Thats a nice looking F6 ya got there. I also have a 52 F-6 Drove it around the block a few times before tearing into it, getting a new (better) cab swapped onto it and rebuilt engine. plus found a 12' Ford script stakebed for it.

hope to have it on the road again this spring but need to really step on it!

keep us posted on your transmission problem.

Cheers

Josh

Well,

yes. you can. Just like I am doing it. AND I'm also using a 2 speed axle.

But it won't be cheap. You'll need an adapter that is compatible with the trans and engine you want to use.

I used a Bendtsen adapter that matches the Y-block to an AOD/E4OD etc.

I wanted an E4OD since it'll have the GCVW capability required with a F-6/600 (mine came out of a 94 diesel F450 Superduty)

It also has the tail-mounted E-brake. (you need that too)

If you want to make everything a little cheaper, get your hands on a 300 cu-in 6 to replace your flathead. The (correct) E4OD will easily bolt directly to the 300. You'll also need a transmission controller (the E4OD is electronically controlled)

Regards,

Rick

Wow.. very cool... thanks... I called the local experts and it looks like if I get a new clutch and have them replace any worn gears in the existing tranny it might cost about $1500. Not too bad considering this girl will probably never see enough miles in the forseeable future to do it again...

I guess I'd start with the clutch, lol. If you open up the tranny, take a look yourself for any chunks of steel in the bottom. At least I think any of those inspection plates should come off.
