I need some advise: 460 or 7.3 TD

Im looking for a 92-97 f350 4x4. I'm trying not to spend an arm and a leg but the Turbo Diesels are really going for alot more than the 460's. Is the Diesel worth it if Im not going to be pulling alot? What about milage? MPG's? Im in CA so fuel prices are big issue. Thanks in advance.

460 will cost you more in gas than 7.3 will in diesel. 7.3 will out pull and out last 460. but 460 will seem more fun to drive in the "seat of the pants". i would never buy a gas truck if i could get a diesel.

Well, thats what Im wonderin. I hear the 460 gets like 10mpg and the TD 15-18. Is this accurate? When I lift it, cause thats what I have to do, Will the numbers be affected much one way or another? Are the 460's lasting a long time?

The extra cost of the diesel will negate the better fuel mileage, unless you plan on putting a LOT of miles on the truck. My 460 gets 11 mpg in town & 13-15 on the highway if I keep it under 65 (4.10 gears).
The 460 is as reliable as gravity, if you get a well maintained one it should go to 150K easily, I've seen many go to 200K. The 7.3 engine itself is bulletproof, but some of the external components are known to cause problems-things like fuel injectors, cam sensors, glow plugs and relays, turbos and turbo pipes, and fuel injection components can be troublesome and expensive.
But,the main reason I bought a 460 instead of a diesel? I hate the noise and smell!!

Bought mine in 89... 460 with the 5 speed and 410's. Been riding on 35's since first tire change. Changed fluids and filters regularly, 2 sets of plugs, 3 batteries, and just changed the front brakes for the first time with 120,000 on the clock!! I get 10 mpg towing 4500lbs 13 empty. I liked driving the 7.3 in my tow truck but for personal use i cant say enough good bout the 7.5.

Sounds like the everyday driver to get is the 460. The CA fuel prices are going to kill me tho. Are the TD capable of getting 17mpg?

Your going to pay to play.... Basically the difference is pay as you go or pay in lumps. The 460 will cost more in fuel but maintainability is a snap. The diesel will go further on a gallon of fuel but you'll pay at maintenance time. Also... when something goes wrong on that diesel.. injector pump at 100,000, or injectors !! you'll forget all about the mileage you WERE getting! For towing though.... that diesel is a beast.

I have owned an 86 F350 CC DRW with the 6.9 as well as a 2000 F350 CC DRW with the 7.3 PSD. I LOVE diesels! With that said, I just bought a 93 F350 CC 4x4 with the 460 since it seems that new or used you have to drive to the moon and back twice for the diesel economy to pay for the increased cost of the vehicle. And to tell to truth, this 460 is fun!

i can buy alot of parts for my diesel when or if i need them for the same as i would spend on parts to keep a 460 running and pulling as well. as said before would never buy a gas powered truck if could have a diesel instead.
