460 7.5L vs newer 6.2L

Hi Folks,

Just a quick question... It seems my '96 7.5L 4x4 is having a tougher time hauling now (I have a cab over camper +/- 3500lbs and a 10,000lb horse trailer whenhorses are loaded) and am thinking of upgrading to a newer (used) F250 or F350 that has the 6.2L engine. My friend says that my big block has more HP than the 6.2L, however, when I look at the spec's, the 6.2L seems to have more HP...am I looking at it incorrectly? He thinks the problem may be with the radiator (the gauge goes to "red" quickly and then comes down quickly when I am on the downhill side) in the 460, and that the truck is fine... Honestly, I get a bit scared when I have to push all the way down on the gas pedal for it to downshift and it is going so slow. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! JL

THANK YOU ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED - I NOW HAVE AT LEAST A STARTING SPACE TO MOVE FORWARD FROM! Thanks Again, JL

Well I will give you a quick "what I think". I just traded in a 2016 Titan XD with the Cummins on a 2011 250 with the 6.2. I have also have had a 2011 Powerstroke. IT WAS STOUT. I tow around 9K plus with 3.73's and a tune only. I may up grade to air bags to get rid of the sag. I have considered Supersprings but I am afraid that may lead to other problems. With all of that said, I personally think you are needing to be in 350 diesel territory. Just my thoughts. I am coming from the crowd that has come to the conclusion that I just do not need a diesel for my needs. Not flaming those who own them. You may over the limit in payload and towing for a gasser. Just my opinion. I would think that you would be in the floor with it in 4th and 3rd just about everywhere you go. Hopefully other will chime in.

I'm at a loss why your buddy thinks a 245HP 7.5L has more Horsepower then a 385HP 6.2L.....You will blown away with how well the 2017+ trucks handle compared to an OBS truck.

That said - for your overheating issues - see the OBS Forum. No reason to get rid of a truck if its just a maintenance issue that needs to be corrected, and cooling systems aren't that hard or expensive to diagnose/fix.

Engine torque specs, transmission ratios, axle ratios, and tire sizes are also important factors. The 6.2’s MY2017+ torque spec is 430 ft-lbs @ 3800 rpm.

The 7.5?

7.5>6.2. Remember, there's no substitute for cubic inches . . . or litres. 'Nuf said.

The 460 was introduced in 1968 and phased out in 1997. In it's day it was good engine, but that was 25 years. ago. Engine technology has changed so much in the past 20 years that there is really little comparison to be made between the two. The biggest advantage your 460 has is its relative simplicity and the ability for you to work on it. Beyond that, the modern engines (and transmissions, don't overlook that) have changed the game entirely.

I remember back in the day when the 460 was the engine we all wanted in our service trucks. The unlucky guys got the 351w trucks. I still have a 96 f350 with the 7.5 as a farm truck and there is just no comparison to a 6.2. The 6r140 transmission makes a gigantic difference over the old E40D or ZF5 combo trucks. I find the 6.2 and 6R140 to have much better gearing and more usable powerband that doesn't fall flat like the 7.5 engines.

The 460 has more low end power because of its size. A 6.2 has more power but you will have to rev it higher to get into its powerband.

The 6.2L will do the job for you, but that's a lot of weight. I would look for an F350 single cab with 4:30 gears or you will be overloaded. Maybe even look for a dually. Buy the newest truck you can afford. 2017+ would be better.

I'd pull the 460 out, drop it off at a machine shop, and tell them you want a reliable 400HP/500ft-lbs. $5k is a better deal than $50k on a new truck.

I'm doing it:

The current 6.2’s eat camshafts...we have had to replace/repair every gas job (6.2) we have had. Some as low as 32k miles

I've owned 2 460s one with a carb and the second one EFI with a Banks Pown Pack and hands down the 6.2 with it's 6 speed transmission and modern computer controls will out pull the 460. Both of my 460s when pulling a trailer in the mountains tended to run warm and suck fuel, the 6.2 has never gotten hot and when compared to the 460 it gets way better mileage pulling a bigger trailer. Both of my 460s had 4.10 gears and my 6,2 has 4.30 gears.
