breather hoses / aftermarket breather

breather hoses / aftermarket breather
I'm thinking about putting an aftermarket breather on my 71 (302 cid). There's a hose that hooks in the same place the breather hose for the PCV system hooks in and goes down to a box (charcoal box?). Another line goes from that box toward the back of the truck... maybe to the gas tank? I know I'd have to get a breather for the valve cover for the PCV system, but what would I do with the other hose that connects to the breather if I went aftermarket?
Also, any opinions on switching to an open element breather?

if daily driver:
Put on a breather with a grommeted opening, use an PCV the fits the larger diameter grommet, use either 3/8 or 5/8 fuel grade hose and connect it straight to the manifold or to the botton of the carb.
if race:
open breather
If you run the open breathers, you will be amazed at how much crankcase oil fumes you will be breathing, especially at a stop. Was worth it for me not to have to breathe that cra......errr crud

I think you're talking about the hose for the PCV system that goes from the breather to the valve cover? I was going to replace it with a valve cover breather.
I need to know what the other hose is and what to do with it. It goes from the breather to a box mounted on the frame rail. I think I've heard similar boxes called charcoal boxes. A line goes from that box toward the back of the truck... I think to the fuel tank.

You are talking about the hose from the charcole canister. It went to the stock air cleaner to pull the vapors from the canister. You could attach a fitting to the bottom of the air cleaner for it. I would make some kind of filter for it. That may not be necessary, don't know how much air would be pulled thru it.
