i was pulling a 16 foot horse trailer to day. and started up a hill and the truck lost all boost and all power and was blowing a dark grey smoke. it did it once before but i killed the truck and waited 10 min and it was fine now it's not
With the limited info provided, My best guess would be the EGR valve hanging up. If it's still under warrentee bring it in ,If not , try cleaning it or if it's that bad, replace it.
check to make sure the blue boots on your turbo and intercooler are in good shape. the one on the turbo to CAC tube is prone to blowing off or tearing.
i changed the fuel filters and they had a gas in them like(unleaded) so i drained the tank and put fresh deisel in the tank and it started to run fine after the fuel in the lines went throught. i had the codes ran to day and it had exhaust gas recirculant low& egr position sensor minimum stop proformance and is runing fine now i cleared codes. would have n unleaded fuel in the truck cause those codes to come up. i just got the truck a few weeks a go it is my first deisel.
Pull the EGR valve and have a look at its condition. Pretty sure there is a good procedure for doing this in the folder at the top of the page. Its a simple task that just about anyone can do. If you changed your own fuel filters you can handle this job.
see there are only really 2 things you cant put in a diesel tank. water and gas. they dont like either. not even 92.
running the truck on gas can and will cause injector damage. remember always always use the green handle.

Going uphill this weekend in a remote part of Vermont and BANG! . . . the loud bang is followed by a 95% loss of power and 0.0 on the boost guage. Roadside assist flatbedded the truck out. Just got a call from the dealer . . . . CAC tube blew off. That was it. A simple part completely disabled my truck and ruined my weekend. I'll be checking those CAC tube clamps from now on.

That same thing happened to me in a cabover Peterbuilt, on a hill, at a stop light....turns green, step on the go pedal, release the clutch and BOOM! Sounded like a Howitzer going off when the tube slapped the bottom of the cab. Luckily we knew what it was and had it fixed in 5 minutes after cleaning our shorts.
