This is my first post and my first diesel. Just did a regular maintenance befor our first camping trip with the Ford (oil, fuel filters). I was quite embarrassed when I was getting passed by 89 Dodge half tons going up hills when mine matted would only do about 60-70 km! All gauges read fine, but the turbo had a real loud scream to it and coolant was leaking out of the resevoir cap! It ran fine on the flats, but as soon as it came to the hills..... FYI my trailer only weighs 5000lbs + quad and dirtbikes, maybe 7000lbs at the most.

 

Check for EGR cooler leaking / bad and with that, oil cooler plugged or both.

How many miles you got on it?

 

OK I've only got 105,000 KM on it.

 

You can park your truck on a downslope and pull your EGR valve. If the EGR cooler is leaking, it will be wet with coolant under the valve.

You could also have head gasket issues, NAPA sells kits for checking for combustion gasses at your degas bottle.

 

Do you recall the turbo boost psi reading on the boost gauge at the time?
Are you sure it was the turbo 'screaming' and not the engine fan?
Was it running hot? If so, is it now running hotter than previous?

 

It wasn't running hot at all. The turbo was reading at about 25-30psi. I just took it to a Ford diesel mechanic close to Calgary here and he was positive its the head gasket. Not what I wanted to hear.

 

Depending on your in-service date, it is a warranty issue.

 

Warranty is all done as of Febuary. Of course!

 

Welcome to the club and not a good club at that. Mine did the same thing with only 5000lbs loaded on the trailer and is going in next week for HG's, but it is still under the esp warrenty I purchased when I bought it. May as well studd it while your in there, you can get them for 395 but im sure they will charge shipping to canada, thats just an assumption as I saw you have 105,000KM's on your truck.

 

I am not saying it isn't HG's, but it seems to me that many of these trucks are mis-daignosed with HG failure when it is really the oil/egr cooler failing. The loud noise you heard was most likely the fan coming on because your oil temp was climbing. My truck did the same thing last year and I thought I lost boost at first also. When that fan comes on, it sounds like a 747 spooling up under your hood and in my case all power and fuel mileage went to crap. I ended having a 50*+ spread between oil and coolant temp. If this is on your dime, I would make sure the tech tests the system properly for a HG failure. Lets hope he was initially wrong!

 

Thanks guys. I appreciate the sympathy! I will make sure he checks it thoroughly before I commit to anything. Has anyone had any luck getting Ford to pay some of it after warranty's over?

As lawnboy suggested, see if you can get the Tech to replace the Ford/Navistar TTY head bolts with ARP studs. That will keep those heads firmly seated.

Great advice above regarding the oil cooler and EGR cooler, both of which should probably be replaced while it's in for surgery. You should also consider adding a coolant filter which will prevent the oil cooler from getting clogged which causes the EGR cooler to fail.

Has the STC fitting been replaced with the updated version? That's also a strongly suggested upgrade during surgery.

 

Quick question, are trucks from Canada under the 100,000 KM or 100,000 mile warranty? If its mile you only have a little over 65,000 miles and should be under warranty yet depending on the purchase date, just a thought.

 

I think because it is an 05, his inservice date puts him out of warranty.

 

If he hasn't had any other 'warranty' work done, Ford also offers a one time out of warranty repair for original owners. I know its doubtful it hasn't had anything fixed, but it is worth noting.
