timing ?'s after EGR removal

Hey everyone! First of all, i want to say that this site is great and I have learned soo much!! Thanks everyone! Now on to my ?....

I have a 300 six with a one barrel carter carb and a duraspark II ignition. The pickup is an 86 and had the feedback carb and TFI igniton when I bought it. The previous owner had butchered alot of the emission stuff. It ran, but not real good. I ran it for awhile and then rebuilt the engine swapping to the non-feedback carb and duraspark II ignition. I had some carb issues but have got them sorted out. Here's the thread pertaining to the carb stuff ... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...g-hassles.html

The engine runs great now, but pings or knocks slightly around 22- 2500 rpm. I have my timing set to 8 btdc. The EGR and AIR pump are removed. I fabricated a block off plate for the EGR and put plugs in the EGR tube holes in the exhaust manifold and carb spacer. I did some reading on here about EGR removal and I've got a pretty good guess thats why I have the pinging. I think my distributor is advancing too much too soon. Has anyone dealt with this?

Thanks!
Ben

EGR does allow the engine to run more timing without pinging and that is a good reason to keep it operating properly.

"Most vacuum canisters are adjusted by sticking an allen wrench in the vacuum tube. Turning the wrench counterclockwise will reduce the timing. Just turn it down a bit at a time until the problem goes away. I had to turn my vacuum advance down until it only pulled in 5°." That is at the very end of a technical article on Distributor Advance. Read the whole article at the link below.

there is a dizzy advance port on the carb, i had the same issues..ended up just pulling the vacuum advance off. Here recently i found a vacuum port diagram for the YF and reinstalled the vacuum advance on the port marked "S", reset the timing to 10* and havent had any pinging issues since. I'm also running 91-93oct gas. This weekend im going to bump the initial timing to 12* for better idle quality and off the line performance.

The whole purpose of the EGR is to mix inert gas into the intake charge to allow the vehicle to run leaner. Now that it's gone you need to rejet the carb. The problem will only show up at cruise rpm as you described.

If you can dial out some timing it can help, but then it may feel boggy at cruise.
