just got back from getting the ac charged up. an old friend showed up as soon as we were about to change out all the o-rings for the conversion. said he had a couple tanks of r12 in his shop and that i could use it to refill the van. sure enough he had 3 full tanks not even been used. so we just vacced it down and recharged it with r12. blows nice and cold now. thanks for the help guys

i've converted a few over before and its a time consuming process. you have to change out all the o-rings and seals for all of the lines. if the compressor is old enough you may have to get new seals for it too or just buy a reman unit. if its still good you just put about a 1/4 to 1/2 bottle of ester oil in the compressor. back in 99 we didnt have any flush machines for this so we just left the system alone. never had any problems. then you just change out the fitting or fittings depending on if you just have 1 port or 2 for the 134a hookups. then its a basic vac down, check for leaks and refill. pretty simple but as i said its just time consuming. hope this helps you.
