92 econoline ac refill

trying to find out how much freon a 92 econoline with a 351W and rear air holds for freon capacity. the sticker is gone under the hood and the guys at napa say it should hold close to 4lbs. i looked on the net and couldnt find anything. is this about right or is that too much?

thanks

4 lbs sounds like a good guess.

If you have salt damage, it can corrode the lines going to the back.

Also that old a system may have other issues.

Are you going to find R12 or refill with R134 is a big issue.

it still has r12 in it as no one has ever converted it over to 134a. the system still has pressure just no freon left to cool. i checked all the lines and they are in great shape. i bought some freeze 12 which is basically an r12 refill.

You would be a lot better off with putting Freeze 12 in it than R134a.
You will have a lot more problems with the R134a unless you put a whole lot of money into the retro fit.

just got back from getting the ac charged up. an old friend showed up as soon as we were about to change out all the o-rings for the conversion. said he had a couple tanks of r12 in his shop and that i could use it to refill the van. sure enough he had 3 full tanks not even been used. so we just vacced it down and recharged it with r12. blows nice and cold now. thanks for the help guys

i've converted a few over before and its a time consuming process. you have to change out all the o-rings and seals for all of the lines. if the compressor is old enough you may have to get new seals for it too or just buy a reman unit. if its still good you just put about a 1/4 to 1/2 bottle of ester oil in the compressor. back in 99 we didnt have any flush machines for this so we just left the system alone. never had any problems. then you just change out the fitting or fittings depending on if you just have 1 port or 2 for the 134a hookups. then its a basic vac down, check for leaks and refill. pretty simple but as i said its just time consuming. hope this helps you.
