FYI trailer lights have fuse

hey just thought i would share this with everyone, my trailer signals and brake lights quite working but the running lights worked fine. leaving me two think signals were there too. anyway i was told that they werent working so i first checked the plug nothing... then i noticed there was a splice in the line with those crimp type connectors that join the 2 wires with a small metal knife like thing, they were a bit cooroded so i cut them out and re joined with 3m heatshrink crimp connectors with that rubber goo in them when heated up... still nothing so i called ford and they told me that there is a fuse under the hood for trailer signals so i looked it up in the manual and thats what it was a 25A fuse.. so when you have this problem check your fuses first !!

"Crimp type connectors" on a brand new wiring harness! WT I hate those things.
But good find on fuse, I would have been checking the wiring first also.

i know what your saying Camp i hate that too, but i couldnt leave those crappie connectors on there to run green gunk up the wires so i figured id better fix it best i could before my harness is green slime... and those 3m heat shrink connectors are pretty solid..
i would have never thought of a fuse on my own? thanks senix ive got that message before to.. funny

On my wifes Envoy there were fuses for left AND right trailer signals. Found out the long way, like an hour and a half later.

I found them the hard way. No lights on my trailer in the middle of nowhere. They use the MAXI fuse so getting a spare in the woods is next to impossible. Good thing I have the upfitters so I was able to take the fuses.

yeh, lost mine last fall as well, and of course no easy way to find a fuse..
out here in the country, the gas stations still sell glass fuses!..

I lost my trailer tail lights a few times it took me forever the first three times as it was a totally different fuse than what was in the owners manual the last two times.

These are a couple in the fuse panel under the hood.

#33) 20 amp, back-up lamp relay
#42) 30 amp, trailer park lamp relay

Those took forever to find in the dark. I have since labeled them in the owners manual as to what they are.

My truck is a early job one build and have decided that Ford misprinted my owners manual. Hope those will help those who need them

Thanks for the info. I hate spending an hour or two trouble shooting then finding the problem so easily. On the other hand info like this can save me an hour or two and a lot of touble. I just better remember it two years from now when it happens to me.

I found this out several years ago doing diagnostics on a left turn problem on a disaster tool trailer. It took awhile, but I got kudos for finding it on an '04 shebby. Apparently several others had tried and it had even been in to the dealership. I can't believe it went to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out.

Sometimes one just has to break down and read the operator's manual. I think we often forget that's what they're there for.
