Will my VIN tell me what transmission?

My 1992 F-150 has a 5.0 V8 with automatic and the trans is slipping it's butt off.I have found a trans at the local salvage yard with 140000 miles for $400.just wondering if the VIN will give them all the info needed to match up the trans.or I could pull the old trans and take it to match up.Thanks

There's no tranny info in the VIN.

Look on your door sticker and tell us the code under "TR" or "TRANS".

On a '92 5.0, it would likely be either an "E" (E4OD, 20 pan bolts) or a "T" (AOD, 14 pan bolts).

How do you know a junkyard trans with 140,000 miles on it will be any better than what you have?

I have a 1996 F150 XL Reg cab/long bed w/ 4.9 Six. It's a 5 spd manual tranny but I have not had any luck determining which 5 spd manual it is. On my door sticker, under "trans" it says "M". I assume this means manual (without telling me which one it is) Anybody else had this issue in finding their 5 spd tranny?

Trans Code M denotes a Mazda M5OD transmission

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I assumed too much (with the "M") and I apparently have the M5OD Mazda. Appreciate your reply.
