They could be a number of issues, but the most common problem is that the clockspring, the device that makes the electrical connections to the switches and controls and the the airbag in the steering wheel, may be worn out. It is a fairly common problem when vehicles start to get some mileage. Does the cruise control or horn work? Those may not have failed, but if they don't work, it is a strong indicator that the clockspring is the issue.
