3 Speed Manual Transmission Problem.

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1965 F100 with a 240 and a 3 speed manual trans. The trans leaks like crazy from the rear seal where the drive shaft goes in.

Is that seal separate from the bearing or is it one piece bearing and seal? If it is separate I would think I should also change the bearing as well (along with the u-Joints since I have to take the drive shaft off anyway).

How hard is the bearing and or seal to replace with the trans in the truck. Would I use a piece of PVC pipe and the outer bearing race to tap in place?

Any tips are GREATLY appreciated!

The seal is separate, but there is no bearing. There is a bushing which is pressed into the extension housing.

B3TZ7A034B (replaced B3TZ7A034A) .. Extension Housing Bushing / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $16.21 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $11.68

D9BZ7052A (replaced C4TZ7052A, 21C7052A) .. Extension Housing Seal / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $17.98 // PARTSGUYED.COM price: $12.95.

Both parts can also be bought from autoparts stores. Both parts fit a gazillion different transmission applications from 1942 thru today, including some A/T's.

80W-90 is the current standard for gear oil. You could use a synthetic gear oil for easier shifts or 50W engine oil. Both of them are slightly pricier.

The bushing shouldent need replacing unless you have a ton of slop in your tailshaft. I have seen that being a problom but only once, and that was cause the dink drove with a bent driveshaft daily for two years. The seals I have changed I have installed with nothing more than a ball peen and a punch if it is recessed. That is the way my dad did it and in 10 years I have ruined one seal. Rub a bit of permatex around the outside of the seal before installing. It will help lubricate it and seal up any minor dings.

ND is right, you can buy this stuff at any decent parts store for a lot less.
