LPOP trashed what went through it

I should have told you guys i took the pics of the chunks through a magnifying glass and all pics are the same pieces, i just turned the big one over in a couple. I didnt even know you could take pics through a magnifying glass ,learn something new every day. oh the actual size of the big piece is 1/2" x 1/4" x 1/8" .

Did you determine if it is magnetic? The picture on the left showing the grain structure appears to be steel, and the photo on the right shows a porous piece with a machined chamfer that resembles a piece of aluminum casting.

Being completely honest, NO. But anytime an engine internal component "let's go", I would be very leary of trying to "band-aid" it only because doing so, is such an expensive gamble, even more so on these 6.0L engines. Let's see now. There's the oil cooler, high pressure oil pump, maybe a turbo, and cam too (if the lobes are damaged).... need I go on?
I remember a long time ago, when a customer who just purchased a used Taurus 3.0L, who's idler pulley let go on the highway. As luck would have it, he drove it long enough to overheat it. Long story short, I got told to put head gaskets in it. One week later, it came back still overheating with the end result being a boneyard engine put in it, AT HIS EXPENSE.

I've done this job before, camshaft replacement, quite extensive. It was needle bearings from the lifter, and one lifter turned in the bore, trashing the cam. If the lifter hasn't turned yet, the cam may be OK. The lifters come apart at the roller axle where the lifter body casting is. That is what that piece looks like. I would take the engine down (front and rear cover, heads, all valley components, cam and lifters) and see if any other debris is anywhere else. I don't remember if the oil cooler is before or after the filter. I believe its before.

If you've done this job before, you'll also know that camshaft removal mandates crankshaft removal before the camshaft can be accessed on these engines. That's my point. The labour involved with "going into" these engines will skyrocket the labour cost that much more to where it won't be too far off from an outright engine replacement. At least with an engine replacement, there will be a 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty to go along with it. "Band-aiding" it with new lifter(s), front cover, oil cooler and anything else that oil with foreign metal debris can pass through, not to mention the internal "clean up" of the engine MAY achieve repairing the issue in the interim, but what kind of warranty can the repairing facility offer on THAT?

Yeah. A replacement would be the best solution. The motor I did has done well though. I think I did it about 2 years now.
But, you can remove the cam without pulling the crankshaft. I've done it. R&R front and rear covers, heads, then cam. Why do you say crankshaft removal is required? I know I never removed the rods from the crank or removed any pistons from the cylinders. Am I missing something or did I do it differently?
