Weak LPOP (Maybe????)

I think my LPOP may be getting weak. Been noticing slightly longer starts and the needle in the idiot gauge is taking between 3 maybe 4 seconds to come up. Trucks got 168,000 and some change on it. Any Thoughts????

It's possible. Why not change it for good measure! It's only like $60 bucks.

my truck has 170 and my after market lpop psi gauge can take 20 sec to show psi. you might want to check it and see. i sure mine is warn and it makes longer starts.

If you change out the lpop get the Mellings pump, it made a difference in my truck besides the stock pump has to go in a certaine way where the Mellings pump it makes no difference. The Mellings pump was $85 shipped and I got it from Clay (Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts | Ford 7.3 diesel | 7.3 powerstroke | Ford Powerstroke | 7.3L Powerstroke Parts)

Hey matt, that doesnt sound to healthy. Just curious how does it start when that occurs? Does it romp, crank and die? Id be curious to know how close your res is to being empty in that kind of start up! What kind of gauge are you using?

it will romp and drop in rpms if i dont let the gp run 50 sec it is not bad. i just need to put one in. most of the time it dose not die. if i push the gas the rmps go up the the pump can keep up better.
i have a used one from the 02 with 145 would it be bad to put it in?

Couldn't hurt but if my truck was not having starting problems probably not something I would have at the top of the to do list. IIRC the idiot light for oil pressure triggers around 7-8 psi.

I changed mine out last year hoping it would solve my severe cold starting issues of dying and romps. The pump was worn and out of clearance spec according to the ford manual (I have about 187k on my truck). I changed over to synthetic so I can't really tell if it helped to much. My truck does seem to start a little faster but may be my imagination.

If you want to test oil pressure there is a port by the oil filter: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - tdpower's Album: Useful pics - Picture

I think you can also check it at the hpop reservoir.

Thanks for posting the link to that picture. I've been looking for that!

Does anyone know what the thread is for the oil test port near the filter? I'm planning on installing a permanent Low Pressure Gauge and want to know if I need to pick up an adapter for the 1/8" NPT pressure sensor.

It should be a 1/8 npt. I just screwed the gauge directly in.

You know after re reading the original post my thoughts have adjusted. I don't really think the lpop has much to do with initial start up. When my lpop was worn my truck would crank up then die. Deal was it fired up immediately, no long crank just bam it was running. Then it would die after the res was sucked dry. Then I had to keep spinning it before the lpop would keep up. Make sense? It could still help the oil pressure coming up faster but I don't think it will make your truck crank faster. If this logic is wrong please help me with an explanation!

According to the ford manual a worn pump can cause long cranks and stalling. Check this out: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - tdpower's Album: Useful pics - Picture, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/m...0&ref=gnr-next

While on the subject...........

When I first got my truck the low oil press light stayed on and the the gauge indicated zero. Replaced the single sending unit and fixed both. I notice now that the light goes out almost immediately but the gauge stays on zero for several seconds after start then pops up to normal. Would this be considered normal operation or an indication of a pump getting weak?

Thinking about adding a sending unit for oil press and toggle switch so my fuel press gauge can double as an oil press guage so I can get real info but won't have time for any truck maintenance for a couple of months.

Thanks,
