2010 f-150 Platinum questions

Just bought a new f-150 platinum and am going to put on a 6" pro-comp lift w/ 35" tires this week. The <NOBR>truck</NOBR> is a daily driver but will be used occasionally off-road. No crawlin, mainly just mud and sand. Will also be used to pull a boat and other small trailers with 1 or 2 UTV's. Nothing very heavy, probably around 6000lb max.

My questions:
<O</O
<O</O

Should I chip it, and if so what would be my best options?
<O</O
<O</O

I apologize for my ignorance, but if a chip is recommended or not... would someone explain why either way?
<O</O
<O</O

I would rather not do a gear swap right now for money reasons, but is this something I should do eventually?

<O</O
Once again, either yes or no but would an explanation would be great.<O</O
<O</O

I am sure my local shop should be able to answer these questions but I just hate asking them things like this because I never know if they are just blowin smoke and trying to sell me something or if they are being straight up.
<O</O
<O</O

Thanks in advance for the help. Any input is appreciated.<O</O <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

No reputable manufacturer makes chips for the 5.4L 3V. However there are several programmers/tuners; SCT, Edge, and Gryphon (re-badged Edge from Power Hungry Performance).

I don't think Edge or PHP have released a programmer for the 09/10 yet. SCT might have - not sure.

The ONLY performance mod I am going to do is the Edge/PHP CTS programmer/tuner. Everything else (intake, exhaust, cams, etc.) will remain stock.

With your 6" lift and 35" tires you need to get custom tunes. This eliminates Edge (stock only). I'm not a gear/transmission expert (especially with the new 6-speed), but I suspect you will want to change gears eventually (I suspect you have 3.73LS).

Plenty of information on the web about PHP, Troyer, 5Star Tuning, VMP, SCT, and Edge. Do your research and check other forums.

It would be better to get custom tunes for these vehicles. Think of it like buying clothes off the rack or having them custom made. Which do you think would be better or have the potential of being better? Because the custom tunes are written for you(driving habits and styles) and your truck(other mods if applicable) you stand a better chance of having a truck more efficient(better mpg) although it isn't a certain thing, just your chances are better.

The only negative thing against all tuners is the fact that their output(hp over stock) is pretty pathetic in the max setting compared to a diesel. So not as much hp/dollar spend there.

Actually a gear swap would probably be the single best thing that you could do considering your planning on that lift and tires. A tuner would also be needed in order to help out with power, but lower gears should be done, tuner alone won't get you there.

He could have 3.55s, that's what I have.

If you have the money for a Platinum and all this other stuff, why skimp on a Pro-comp lift? It is widely reguarded as one of the cheapest (light duty) lifts available. If I were lifiting my new truck and planning to tow, I definately would not go with Pro- comp or Fabtech... But hey, I've only grown up and learned to drive off road, so what do I know?

Kindly pointing out what would be better might be more helpful than just bashing what he's planning on buying...

Really your tire upgrade is only about 3 inches (as the truck comes stock with 32's). I'd give it a try with the lift and see how you feel about the performance of the truck before i got a tuner or swapped gears.

The irony is(and I'm not saying that this is the case here) the very thing that makes people think you have money is the very same thing that means you don't have any money left.

My thoughts may be totally backwards but if I planned all of these goodies for a brand new truck, I'd do the gear swap first. And, I'd go after a nice locker for the back end while it's all out in pieces.

Does RIZE make a lift for these trucks yet, they make some nice looking systems.
