1996 F250 Powerstroke E4OD 4x4 with a Flashing OD and some cold starting issues
Hi,
So I was in the pre-97 F150 and bigger forums and they told me to come here
I recently bought this F250 275k mile powerstroke with the automatic transmission and 4wd and the OD OFF light started flashing on the way home.
I have scanned the thing and the code(s) that come back are as follows:
P0478
P0340
P0470
P1728
The crappy ones are the P0340 which is for the CPS so i know I will be changing this and the P1728 which indicates that something is slipping inside the transmission. The thing is in limp mode and shifts like poo.
Do you guys think this is just for the torque converter going bad and leaking which is causing the slipping or do you think the tranny is toast?
Then the cold start. It would take about 6-8 tries to start the truck. Once started however it will run perfectly. Also after it's initial start it starts effortlessly. Do you think this is just the GPR or could it also be the GP's?
Thanks in advance!

well it soundslike you might have gotten dooped. unless you just have horendous luck and had a tranny code set just when you bought it lol but that is the exact reason most likley the guy sold that truck, he just had the code reset beforeyou picked it up. if you wana spend the 2-3g on a rebuild then youll have a nice truck and a new tranny!
and its hard to tell what is exactly slipping, if your on the highway and your torque convertor just locked up and you suddlenely see your rpms going up and down, thats the tc, but if your driving around down below 35 ish when the tc would lock up, then id say its your forward clutches going.
1 other thing, how is your speedo? working and fully functional?

It's probably the torque converter. The code will only set when the trans is in overdrive and the torque converter clutch is locked. It only takes 50 RPM slip to set the code, and that's too little to see in the tach, so it's rare that you would see anything wrong when you're driving.
Sometimes you can just replace the torque converter, but with that many miles I'd rebuild it since a lot of the labor is getting the trans out of the truck and back in.
