96 f350 manual tranny interchange years
I have a 96 F350 singlewheele 7.3L Diesel with 493,000 miles with a 5 speed transmission, it is stuck in 4th gear so im looking for a new transmission. I need to know what years, and different engines will interchange or swap easily into my truck. It is used for a lot of work and heavy pulling with a backhoe and concrete forms also. Thank you.

im gunna say no the 5.4 was a modular design the only thing the 5.4 can swap between in terms of transmissions is the 4.6
the superduty just had 3/4 ton axles and different frame and suspension than the f150s..... it is kinda the economical superduty.... the gears to tow heavy loads but the fuel consumption to drive everyday.... u know what im saying?

I have a 99 superduty that has a 5 speed that im going to replace soon as well. but its gas and has 262,000 miles. its my dd. it grinds going into 5th gear at low speeds. I was not for sure if my 2 trucks trannys interchange or not because there both zf trannys i think. So any f250 or f350 with a 7.5 460 or 7.3,6.9L diesel engine will work in the 96? I have found plenty of 87-89 f250's but the part numbers on the tranny is different than the 1996.

as long as it is a big block it will work the part numbers are different prolly cause the 87-91 models use the transmission for the speedometer..... and they soon phased that out with speed sensors in the diff. i guess im not 100% of the reason...
it will bolt to the block but i think a sensor is different or added or may not be on it at all and thats the different part number....
maybe some one else here has some insight in that and will eventually respond
srry im not much help.

Take a look at the application progression chart from ZF: http://www.zf.com/na/content/media/i...ion_Charts.pdf
You should look for a 96-97 diesel truck for a direct interchange.

As already mentioned, the ZF would be a good trans. for your truck, would it not already be in your truck??I just changed my 96 f-150 ex cab 2wd 300-6,from a e40d to a T-18,
what a good transmission this is,I use my truck on my wifes farm on the border of Panama and Costa rica and it transformed my rather mundane ride into a solid work truck,it now has *****,it pulls like a truck should,I dont know your planned usage for your F-350,but a good low mile T-18 is not a bad choice,if your truck is to be used as a work horse like mine is.In your case,a ZF 5-speed is probably the best choice, although a NP-435 is also a solid strong tranny, you could consider. My bad,I just seen where your truck is a diesel, not sure if a 4 spd. will bolt to it.you need to get a ZF5-speed.
