There should be a second arm right next to the shift linkage arm that it would attach to. This arm will only move about 1/8" - 1/4" at the most. Sorry I do not have a photo hope this helps.

This is a generic illustration from the Ford parts manual but it will give you an idea of where the linkage is attatched.

1974 F100 with an FMX? No such thing as original, so this trans was swapped in.

The only F Series trucks to use an FMX were 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6.

If the trans was swapped, the original kickdown rod from the 1974 F100 may not work, as its configuration may be different.

1974 as original: If the truck has a 240/300 I-6 or a 302, the A/T is a C4 (11 trans pan bolt holes). If a 360/390/460, the A/T is a C6 (17 trans pan bolt holes).

The FMX has 14 trans bolt holes.

FMX

A little clairification for us the ignorant--the fmx is the tranny kickdown?

I have a 79 F150 with a 400, motorcraft carb and what I thought was a tranny kickdown (the part that looks like and is mounted like the Ford manual picture for the 460 and 390)

From what I am gathering either the piece in question is not a tranny kickdown or it is some kind of aftermarket/custom add on.

Is this correct?

Thank you

A FMX is a type of automatic transmission, the "kickdown" or passing gear lever is a tubular piece of metal that hooks to the carb down to the trans.

The transmission kickdown (basic p/n 7A187) is the rod that goes from the carburetor to the transmission.
Before electronic controls this is how the transmission knew when the throttle was floored and to kickdown into a lower gear.
It is attatched to an arm on the throttle shaft of the carburetor and the other end hooks to one of the two arms that comes out of the transmission, the other arm is the gear selector and goes to the gearshift.

A picture (or two, or three, or whatever) says a 1000 words.

Since the OP failed to mention the engine size. 1974 F100: Here's all the kickdown linkage and etc that applies.

Illustration Section 97, Page 7 (I-6) / Page 8 - 302 (upper pic) 460 - (lower pic) / Page 12 - 360/390 (lower pic).

Thank you

Thank you gentlemen,
The linkage is exactly the same on mine (even though it is the 400) so we are on the same page.

To avoid starting a new thread for a very similar question, on my 78 with the, motorcraft carb, there is a part that looks like a big short fat sparkplug sitting directly in front of the end of the gas pedal linkage. Coming out of the end of this thing is a wire.

I can't see this mystery part in the provided diagrams.

Any ideas?

Check out basic p/n 9D856 (solenoid). If this is what you're talking about, it is a solenoid that kicks up the idle speed under certain conditions for emission controls. I believe also that it kicks up the idle on a/c equipped trucks but not sure of that.

Got it

That's the animal. I was guessing it was some kind of emissions deal. My truck must have every emissions option possibe nothing but extra hoses and useless switches.
