First of all, many thanks to all the fine folks on this board that provide so much valuable information. I have been reading (there is a lot to read) as much as I can about the 6.0 and how to maintain and improve it.
Update on VGT:
Problem may be solved. Code was "turbo underboost". Dealer fix was replace the VGT with new improved version that does not rust. $2500. I was reading many of the issues on this forum and yesterday I decided to try a EGR disconnect. Wow! I have a new truck.
Prior to disconnect the turbo psi would only boost if I went full throttle and then it took 4.5 seconds to engage. The power always felt like a snail in mud and fuel economy was 13.4 best possible.
After disconnect, the psi gauge shows some involvement at all speeds and bounces to 30 psi at full throttle with only a very slight delay. The truck is very responsive and calculated MPG is 15.4 at 65 mph. It seems like this diesel/vgt combo was designed and built to run this way, and that maybe the EGR setup was an after thought to meet epa standards. Anyway, I have a totally different truck right now, and time will tell if this is a permanent fix.
I hope it is ok that I did not post this in the rather massive EGR thread, as I thought it was applicable to this discussion.
One disclosure that may have affected the large prior and current performance differential is that I have 35 inch tires but the speedo and shift points were adjusted by the dealer.

I, too, have a similar issue. After tearing the top end down and doing both complete head overhauls, new head gaskets, head studs, EGR delete and oil cooler update I am having the dreaded turbo overpressure issue while throwing the P0299 underpressure code. I completely cleaned and lubed the turbo when I had it out, so I didnt think that was the issue. But searching the P0299 issue I decided "What the hell" and tore it out again to be sure. What did I find when I pulled the turbo? Nothing. Vanes are perfect, unison ring slides like greased lightning, and the removal of the inspection plug revealed that everything was good. There was some oil in the housing that I figure is the result of serious overpressure because it originates from around the spindle shaft. BTW, should I rebuild the turbo and replace the seals at this point to prevent runaway or further damage? Anyway, I also took out the MAP sensor and it was caked up like hell. Sonic ceaning it now. Would that cause the VGT valve to act erratically, or be a slow/no respond? This thing has absolutely crappy throttle response right now, very little low end, very lackluster mid band, and top end.... forget it. Sounds like a broken gas main driving by though. And where is the EBP sensor on the `04 models? I want to pull it and check it too.
On a seperate issue it is also throwing code P0282 - Injector Circuit Low #8 Cylinder, and P1000 - Monitor Checks Not Complete. Pulling the #8 cylinder injector harness while running causes the #8 cylinder to drop, so I know the inject is working, at least to some degree.
