Help Truck quit after running for 10 secs

On Friday I started my truck and it quit after running for 10 seconds , I restarted it and again it quit after 10 secs, noting that the oil psi was in the normal on the guage and oil level is good, But when I started it the 3rd time there was nothing at the key in the start position no clicking nothing at all. I checked the fuses all good. In the run position everything cycles (glowplugs) etc.I hotwired the starter with the key on and it turned over but it did not start.
On Saterday morning it started but quit again and nothing at the key!
Has this happened to anyone else?

Does anyone have a starting circuit wiring diagram for a 2003 F350 6.0l diesel

I'm not a tech, but since I'm first on the scene I will suggest - pull the top off the upper fuel filter and check the bowl for fuel. Then have someone turn the key on and see if the bowl fills. Also put your ear down near the lower fuel filter/fuel pump and listen to see if it sounds like it is running.

The whole thing sounds like you are not getting fuel, and the injector fuel pressure reached a low point where it won't start.

That's someplace to begin. Maybe someone who knows what the hell they are talking about will wander in soon. Because I don't.

Here's a link to Bismic's excellent thread on diagnosing a no-start condition. It's from the 6.0 Tech Folder sticky at the top of this forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...condition.html

With the key on I have glowplugs but no fuelpump and when key is turned to start position there is nothing (won't turn over) batterie voltage is 12.5.
I went through the teck folder earlier.
I'll have a code reader within the hour.

Since you went through the tech folder, how far in the troubleshooting did you get?

Specifically (as bpounds asked earlier), did you do the test to see if your secondary fuel bowl is getting fuel?

So at this point you aren't getting a starter signal and you don't think your fuel pump is running. Just because the curlyque wait to start light is on doesn't mean you are getting glowplugs either. And you could have 12.5 volts without having enough amperage to turn the starter, but I digress. Check your fuel FIRST and clean your battery cables. Lets eliminate the simple things first. This all sounds like an electrical problem to me, and possibly it's just the key switch OR a relay that is activated at key on to trigger starter and fuel pump. If a code scan shows nothing then we'll dig deeper. I also suspect maybe a harness short or a plug that has gotten loose.

It ocurred to me that one thing that could cause all those symptoms, is a bad ground. Particularly the ones on the engine block.

yes I took the cap off the fuel filter and turned the key on and no fuel,
2 brand new batteries 3 months ago and all connections are clean and like I said earlier I hotwired the starter and it whips over

Okay, good, that's progress. Next step, find out why you don't have fuel pressure. Get a VOM, pull the plug off the fuel pump. Turn the key on and see if you get voltage down to the plug.

Yes = bad fuel pump (or other fuel flow issue)
No = electrical problem

BTW, don't recall if you stated, how long since you changed the fuel filters? Got plenty in the tank?

I have the starting circuit diagram for a 2005. I just don't know if it would help, and might even complicate the problem.

Great post Bill.

It is not too hard to verify if you have plugging in the pump suction line and the line from the pump to the filter. Disconnect the pump discharge line and blow air through. Disconnect the pump suction line and watch the flow (have a clean container to drain it into). If the lines are clear, the primary filters are clean, and you are getting voltage to the pump, then it is the HFCM.

Do you have a steel fuel tank? Do you run biodiesel or veggie oil?

You may have done these things since you are asking specifically for a wiring diagram, but it is hard to guess at what all you have done.

When checking the circuits at the HFCM, be sure to check the ground circuit too. Also, just because you have voltage at the HFCM, doesnt mean the circuit is ok. A volt drop is the best way to check.

With that being said, I would guess that there is one culprit for both ailments. I would be looking at diagrams for a circuit that would affect both fuel and start.

If the motor doesn't crank, turn over, and the fuel pump doesn't run, 1 plus one equals electrical.

Sorry guy's I havn;t been online for awhile been working out of town.

I'm leaning towards the electrical problem because when I energizi the starter at the key I can get the fuse for the ignition switch to light up with a test light but that is as far as I can get without a witing diagam.
And thanks for the links to the 6.0l engine wiring diagrams but I need the diagram for the actual truck for the relays.
bpounds could you send me the diagram for the 05 at least it's a start?
As for the code reader it keeps coming up as ( it unable link up to the vehicle )

If it's unable to link up to the code reader then that's from a blown fuse also. That's a good place to start.

Here are all the engine wiring with the relays included: http://www.backglass.org/duncan/ps60...l/ps60_090.jpg http://www.backglass.org/duncan/ps60...l/ps60_091.jpg

Both these pages put together will give you everything from the key switch to starter I believe.
