Steering column, auto vs manual

My truck is a manual, but I'd like to make it an automatic someday. My question is, on the '56, is there just a piece you add onto the column or do I need a whole new column to make it an on the tree automatic? I haven't been able to find any good pictures of this, it just looks like there is an additional pipe that a shifter controls.

Thanks

I am using the stock three on the tree shift for my C6 Auto and it works just fine. Mechanically, you would just use one of the two shifters on the bottom of the column, and one shift rod.

Where things start getting a little funky is when you try to mount an indicator on the steering column to show you what gear you are in. Since the 56 came with an optional automatic transmission, I'm sure you could find those parts. I had to make one out of a second dash/column bracket. It looks "original" enough.

Here is a link to a thread we had on this a while back with some pictures. If you need more info, let me know!
