Post Can I use RTV on C-6 pan gasket?

I've got a small leak from the transmission pan gasket and its dripping fluid on the exhaust.

I've been under the truck re-torqueing the bolts hoping that the leak stops. No joy. The level is ok.

I bought a new Fel-Pro gasket (rubberized gasket) and the instructions say not to use any sealant with this gasket. The Haynes Manual says to use some RTV on it.

What is correct?

id do it how fel-pro says to do it. and if its one of the reuseable ones it doesnt need it fer sure. just be absolutely sure that both surfaces are oil free!

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT use rtv on the pan gasket. It will come off and cause all sorts of probs such as pluging your oil pickup.

From what I am told RTV is not a good idea!!!! Oh yeah and if you ever try to patch a broken tranny cooling line do not use a rubber hose(such as fuel line), very bad also since the atf eats away at the rubber over time.

Appreciate the quick response. I'll pass on the RTV.

Like the guy said, make sure the surfaces are clean. Also no oily residue, use something that will leave the surfaces totally dry and not slippery. I use brake cleaner or some gun scrubber stuff.

Also make sure the srufaces are smooth and flat. Check the surface of the oil pan. Sometimes the bolts will cause the surface of the pan to dimple and may cause a leak unless flattened out. I use a small peen hammer or a flat punch to gently flatten the surface out.

RTV can be used but it all depends on WHAT KIND. Some work but most will swell and get loose in contact with oil. Been there done that. Use only the CORRECT RTV and only if called for. Doesn't look like it is called for by your gasket maker.

Good Luck,

I was always told never to use rtv on transmissions due to the chance of it dislodging and getting inside where it doesn't belong.causes all kinds of problems.

Hey buddy-
Before you put it all together, (without RTV), check to make sure the lip on your pan is still flat. Over-torquing it will cause it to warp and will continue leaking no matter what you do.
