i have an STX and installed a cluster from a XLT. The original didnt have a tach and I wanted one. The XLT cluster went right in and worked right away. all needle sensors working. now for the following questions.
1. how do i install the compass and get it to work with the cluster? old cluster didnt have compass
2. How do i get the outside temp gauge to work also?

look above your dome light inside the overhead cover
there should be a handful of pigtails. if you have a 4-pin, and a 6-pin you should be set. I can't remember which is which, but 1 of the pigtails is for the compass, the other pigtail is for the auto-dim mirror
there will also be 2 other pigtails for the dome light. you don't want these
I'm not sure if you can get the thermo to work or not. After you plug the compass in, see if the cluster works. If not, then a Dealership will have to go into the PCM and turn that feature on via the Can-Bus network
edit: you need those 2 pigtails I was talking about though. Without them, you'll have to custom wire everything in...and to be honest, I'm not even sure it can be done.
also, you might as well pick up an auto-dim mirror at the same time. the compass appears to be part of the one in my truck

yes/no
it depends if the Tach has been enable in the PCM. for the V-6/Standards...yes. Not likely for your truck though.
alot of the XL guys have to get that programmed at the dealer to get the Tach to work...and the compass/thermo as well if the new cluster has it

just so you are aware, you are technically commiting odometer fraud. I'd be very carefull with that new cluster...hopefully the mileage of the newer one is very close to your original mileage.
probably should get that reprogrammed to match the original

i have all the documentation for the two odo's. I have no intention of selling the truck ...I took a pic of the starting miles and will keep the original cluster so i have it all. Whats funny is i went in reverse...my orginal ODO was about 11k and the one i put in was 24k when installed. most go in reverse
as for reprogramming i was told the dealership cannot do that. supposedly the two clusters have to be sent to some ford department and they do it there...i am not parking the truck for a couple of weeks for this to happen. This is a daily driver for me.

Dealerships have issues with reprogramming the Inst. Clusters because of Liability.
They are scared of being accomplices to Odometer Fraud.
However, they have the tools in-house to reprogram Inst. Clusters to the correct mileage. Most of the time, they force people to buy the Upgraded Cluster brand new, and do the install.

it runs about $300 total for the labor and the parts...but you have the correct mileage on your cluster, and that also covers the reprogramming the PCM to turn on features
