Guages-single wire temp senders

Forgive me for starting another guages thread.

Also I would have loved to purchase guages from one of our sponsors but the Cdn dollar, shipping and customs means I the US vendors are out of luck right now. Sorry guys.

I went over to MOPAC here in Calgary and picked up a matching set of Ultralite Autometer guages and an overhead pod. I my haste to get the guages I picked up Pyro, trans temp and Oil temp. Trans and Oil guages are electric 1/4 sweep guages.

These come with single wire senders that ground thru the sender body.

Can you use teflon tape or do I need some other sealant?

I was going to mount the engine oil temp at my bypass filter (under the truck) by installing tee on the supply line and the sender in the branch.

Do you guys think that I can ground the body of the sender thru all these fittings or should I upgrade to full sweep electric which have two wire senders?

You should not have any problem with grounding thru teflon tape. Whatever your placing the sending unit in must be grounded however.

You can alway run a seperate ground wire from the sensor body if you have a problem.

I got my oil temp plugged into the oil filter up top. As it's plastic ( or phenolic material), I had to run a wire from it to a ground.....Used hose clamp on the sender body to an engine ground. Works great.

Just my two cents worth....

As skoveng said, there should be no problem grounding thru teflon tape but just something to keep in mind - teflon tape is NOT a sealant, it is a thread lubricant. There are a number of excellent teflon based thread SEALANTS, Loctite makes a good one.

Thanks guys, Two more questions:
1. Is it necessary to use any anti-sieze or sealant on the threads of the fitting that screws into the exhaust manifold for the pyro sender?

2. I have found the power wires for the guages and guage lights, but should I run one ground and two power wire to the pod area then connect all the guages in the pod or run all the wires from the guages down to the spot under the dash?

Its not necessary to use anti-sieze but it isn't a bad idea in case you ever have to change the sensor. Just be sure to use a high temperature anti-sieze (ceramic, nickel or graphite based). Personally, I use a ceramic based anti-sieze for almost everything.

I would run a single, appropriately sized power and ground wire up to the pod. Much neater and easier.
