Exhaust questions, muffler and catalytic converter
On my 86 bronco with a 302, I noticed the other day that the muffler is starting to rot out and leak. I was wondering if I would be waisting money by putting on a muffler like a Flowmaster 40 and removing the catalytic converter. I am not in an area that does smog checks, but I don't know if removing it would hurt the engine or what. Would doing this with a flowmaster muffler help with power and fuel mileage? How loud is the series 40 anyway? I want it to sound nice but I don't want to use earplugs when driving on the highway.

you will be fine pulling the cat. most people pull them out as they are more problems then they are worth most of the time. you will gain a pit in both fuel and power as now your exast will be more free flowing. Bu the gain will not be enough that you will feel in the seat of your pants. I just but a cherry bomb on my truck replacing the old one. It was actually quiter than it was before and had a nice tone i used the longer glass packed. Not sure how the flowmaster sounds.
