Hey i wanna take the top off of my 92. The Problem is i dont have the right kinda wrench for the job. It looks kinda like a star wrench with a peg in the middle. I've gone to the local hardware store and ask them for one but when i described it they had never heard of such a thing. Any suggestions on where to find one or exactly what it is called.
Yup, that's the Torx head that Ford put on there to keep you from taking the top off. Reason being they added rear shoulder belts and a 3rd brake light in the top, and any vehicle that is designed with the 3rd brake is illegal without it. And, naturally, it's illegal for passengers to not have seatbelts, and they won't be able to wear them since they're attached to the top.
IF you take the top off, you pretty much don't have anything to worry about legally, since most police officers aren't exactly going to be trained in telling a 92 - 96 Bronco from an 80 - 91. Also, if you do want to be legal, put a third brake light on the tailgate or spare tire (ala jeeps), and put in a rear bench from an '80 - '91 so the passengers have lap belts. Good to go.
As for taking the top off, check out this thread on fullsizebronco.com. The issue of the Torx bits has been discussed many times, so it's well covered.
Once you have them out, replace them with standard bolts so they're easier to remove. The thread and size is described in there as well.
Take your time as you don't know the last time the top's been off and how seized some bolts are. When I removed mine, I broke several bolts. Fortunately, the more you break, the easier it is to get the top off. Then, you have like 1" of broken bolt to grab a hold of with vice grips.
Thanks guys for all the help. Im gonna wait a few more days or maybe a week before taking the top off. The darn weather in SC cant make up its mind to be winter or summer (there aint no such thing as spring here) Two weeks ago we had a snow day last week it was in the 80's tomorrow its gonna be in the 40's and rain. I hope to have the top off next week and ill post a few pics if i do.
We went from 80's to 20's here in the course of two days... Got a film crew from Hollywood we are working with... they are NOT used to these temperature swings. I love it... I'll take a good tornado over earthquakes and mudslides any day.
BTW, I think I've LOST more tamper-proof T40 Torx drivers in the last few years than I care to think about. I keep loaning them to other 92+ Bronco owners.
Yea i found someone who has a set i can borrow. Glad to hear i aint the only one who is having trouble with the weather. Once again thanks for all the help you guys gave me. looking forward to asking yall with any other questions i'll have.
