223 head swap. Head bolt size difference

Can I use a later head on my earlier block? My block is bored for 7/16" head bolts. My rebuilt head is the newer 1/2" bolt size. I'm told the 302 hot rod guys use a special washer with a short bushing on the head bolt to bush a 7/16" up to 1/2" when fitting 351 heads on a 302. The washers are available at ARP fasteners. Sounds like it would work?? Any one done it?ThanksBob

My guess is that Col. Flashman or NumberDummy would know. Hopefully they will be around soon. Good luck.

C1TE6065A .. Bolt, Cylinder Head / 1/2" -13 x 4.44" / Fits: 1961/64 223 I-6.

B2AZ6065A .. Bolt, Cylinder Head / 7/16" -14 x 4.06" / Fits: 1952/60 223 I-6.

Not only is the head different, but...so is the valve cover & gasket.

The 1952/60 valve cover is held on by two nuts that thread onto two studs which protrude thru the center of the cover.

The 1961/64 valve cover uses 8 bolts around its perimeter to retain it.

I have a pal (Col. Flashman knows him too) that has a 1954 F100 with the later head. I'll have to call and ask him what he did to make it work.

Will post back when I find out later today.

I bought my rebuilt 233 - it's a 54 with a 63 head. Can't tell you the details of the machining, but it does run nicely!

I checked out your gallery. Nice truck. Hope mine comes out that well. Living proof that the head swap is doable. Thanks

Ford tractors in the 50's and 60's had the same situation. The early heads had 7/16" bolts and the later heads used 1/2" bolt. In the book they call it "new head to old block" and used shoulder bolts. They had 7/16" thread and 1/2" shoulder on top to take up the extra room. Ford part# D3NN-6065-A for the bolts. The book shows them to be 4.00" long. I don't know if they are still available. Dave

Sorry I should have added this also. Ford also made a stud to go the other way. !/2" threads on bottom & 7/16" shank 4" long. Then you put nuts on the top. Ford part# D3NN-6N014-A for the studs. Dave

D3NN-6N014-A is not a Ford part number, it's an ID number, which is prolly related to a tractor or an industrial engine, as the 3rd/4th digits of NN in the prefix is a dead give-away.

The last year Ford marked actual part numbers on parts was 1956.

Dave that's interesting. I will try to find some of them. My Dad is into old Farmalls. His network of tractor guys might be able to steer me to a source. Especially as the ARP insert washers are almost $5 each!! on top of the price of new head bolts. Thank youBob

I'm still waiting for my pal with the 1954 F100 to call me back...he's a former line mechanic now retired.

If you P/M me, I'll pass along his West LA phone number...he has no computer.

Sorry, that might be right for automotive division, but not correct for ag. These ARE good part numbers. I called my local dealer this morning. #D3NN-6N014-A step down studs are $7.24 each. #D3NN-6065-A shoulder bolts are $24.21 each. 3rd and 4th digit NN numbers are very common in ag parts. Dave
