'48 226 Crankcase Ventilation Tube
I am confused about the crankcase vent tube. I have a 7HA 6 cylinder that has a short tube, maybe 6" long, that has been welded or soldered onto the center valve cover. I don't think it is original but don't know. Maybe there is an extension that goes on it to take it to the bottom of the motor? I have another motor, a 1HA 6 cylinder, that I believe is a '51 model. It has a much longer tube (all one piece) which can be removed and is mounted on the rear valve cover. This one looks to me to be the correct one but I don't know. This position is close to the starter but I guess it can be moved enough to allow removal of the starter. My Ford Truck Illustrations book shows the longer tube for the 226 on the valve cover on page 139 and what appears to be the same tube on the rear cover on page 147. My parts book lists a tube-ventilation extension for the 226. Are all the tubes supposed to be the long version or is there a 2-piece version? Which valve cover is it supposed to be mounted on and does it matter?
