I have a 59 effie with a reman'd 292 from ATK. Unlike the pulled block, this one didnt have the mount for the road crankcase vent tube on the side of the block, it never cast in there. The only crank vent I currently have on it is the oil filler vent. Should I bore a hole in my valve cover to install a breather? Or possibly a PCV valve with a lead running to my intake? Or is the oil fill tube enough? Thanks for any advice you may have.
Y-Blocks were vented in two ways. The early blocks had a side mounted canister which contained a small large-pore filter and the road draft tube. The later blocks had a tube that was plumbed in to the back of the lifter gallery cover (the cover directly under the intake manifold). Might try to locate a 58 - 62 full size Ford in a wrecking yard with a 292 and pull the cover and tube. Than it is a direct bolt-on to your engine. Good Luck !!
Thanks Mullet, for the advice. I knew about the side vent on the older ones (which my block doesnt have the port for). But I didn't know about the vent in the push-rod cover. I may try to find a good push-rod cover with a vent. What do you think about the valve cover breather adaptation though?
I have a 272 with an oil bath cleaner from a newer motor, it has a vent tube from the filtered air side in topof the filter cover, I would like to convert to pcv valve type ventilation. it has the road draft tube and filter on side of engine and oil cap vent. any suggestions would be appreciated as to convert to pcv valve and use airfilter (clean air) to vent crankcase. in other words no unfiltered air in engine to clog oil passages, garry

Would not recommend moding the valve covers since splashing oil would be a problem without a baffle. It would be better to put the hole in the gallery cover next to the distributor and run a tube down to the bottom of the engine where low pressure while driving will pull the fumes out. If thinking about going to a PCV system, the easiest way to go would be to find a Ford carb spacer with the integral tube which could be plumbed to the moded gallery cover. I would prefer to keep the system open since the system was not designed for closed system operation (carb jetting). Be sure to use an open breather cap.
